I'm sorry, you don't need a shovel to extract someone from a treewell. I've done it myself. It's not like being burried in a slide where the snow has set up solid and person is 5 feet down. The snow around tree wells on the days when someone is actually able to get stuck in them will be light and fluffy.

Take your skis off to shovel with in the light fluffy snow that makes tree wells dangerous and get back to us. You’d be as bad off as the person in the tree well if you took your skis off.

You can stomp out a spot next to the tree and then take your skis off. The tree well is dangerous because you likely are falling head first into the well, sometimes with your arms at your side. Not to mention trauma risk. You can't really shovel well (with an actual shovel or your skis) with your skis on, so you're going to have to take your skis off. Ya, you might sink in up to your neck in the unconsolidated fluff, but as long as you are right side up, you will be fine.

I've never fallen in a tree well. Had to rescue one friend from one across the street from Stevens.

Like I said before, I don't care if you want to wear a pack wherever. That's fine. But why force everyone to do it? This seems like such a corporate Vail/Alterra idea to promote.

I do ski with a beacon in bounds on days I think I need to. And when I ski, I wear a pack, because I only have touring skis and I will probably be skinning somewhere. But I don't like snowboarding with a pack, which is what I mainly do in bounds.

I don't wear a helmet touring. Does that make everyone angry?

The only thing that makes me angry is the snowboarding

I wore the pack I usually do.
She rails like usual.
We've both been avalanched inbounds au Crustal.
We showed DanKo around.
Ibeen stop involving the known idiots as much as I can.
Snow was firm.
Northway was better than Hamburger.

I know, it's not feasible to gatekeep all the avalanche terrain at xtal with gear requirements 'cause it's spread throughout the place. Beep-on at ch6 is about the only such measure one could enact as it's a chokepoint, so it's the only one I proposed. And of course patrol is excellent, I don't mean to detract from their efforts.

Just spitballin here about a persistent discomfort with the actions of the clientele, I don't actually have any good solutions. Nor do I even ski there anymore.

Snoqualmie snow report this morning hinting at some hilariously bad grooming and also breakable crust on lower mountain Alpental for opening day. Maybe we get a surprise international rope drop later in the afternoon?
