I always keep my pack on, even when I'm skiing the bunny hill with my child (the contents change for sure).

I've had my pack bail me out when a shark tooth above a scree patch on the Chair 6 traverse caused me to release and tumble down the scree slope. Instead of a bunch of bruises on my back +/- severe injuries from sliding down a scree slope totally out of control all I had was… a dent in my helmet and a bruise on my shoulder and some scuffs on my pack.

There are a million unanticipatable ways that having gear could help you or someone else and imagining all the reasons "it wouldn't work" is just a cognitive trick you're playing on yourself so you don't have to say, "I just don't want to" (which is your decision and all)

Baker has been known to require beacon, shovel, probe, partner to ride C-6 (and I think C-1) in the past. Don't know how recently it's happened tho.

    This is a good point.
My current MO is to skip the pack if the "near treeline" zone is green, but I'm reconsidering.

Wow this thread cunted up quick. You'd think we're in the middle of an inversion pattern or something. Can't wait for the two week long January dry spell.

Ok, what's the Northway approved way to describe the Crystal boundary in a sentence or less? There are three prominent points from Silver Queen, with Three-Way being the last. And the boundary is just a stones throw from the Three-Way summit, and is what I would describe as the Western Flank of Three-Way Peak. It's well signed, both in person, and on the map. And I assume danko can decide for himself if he gets all the way out there and feels ok about going further. Not to mention, avy danger today is non-existent.

God, this place really has turned into Alpinezone. Where's Greg?

Why is it on TGR that whenever someone doesn't like or agree with what another says, people feel the need to play the "does he even ski card?"

Well, I do ski, and snowboard. Been doing it since I was six. Raced. Started backcountry in 1997 in CO. Been skiing Crystal backcountry since 2005. I just don't feel the need to post photos all over the internet in an insecure attempt to justify my existence. Also, I came to the conclusion long ago that there are enough people who ski where I ski already, and I don't need to do anything to help encourage more.

I'll be traversing through Southback tomorrow. Should I take a picture of the moguls that I am irresponsible if I ski without a pack on?

Like I said before, I don't care if you want to wear a pack wherever. That's fine. But why force everyone to do it? This seems like such a corporate Vail/Alterra idea to promote.

I do ski with a beacon in bounds on days I think I need to. And when I ski, I wear a pack, because I only have touring skis and I will probably be skinning somewhere. But I don't like snowboarding with a pack, which is what I mainly do in bounds.

I don't wear a helmet touring. Does that make everyone angry?

Only if you've already broken your snowboard while digging me out, and could have used it as a shovel.

I don’t care how you describe the boundary, just don’t include areas that are beyond avalanche mitigation in a recommendation for avy controlled areas to ski.

Oh man I was hoping for a few pages of stoke and just this fucking lame shit. I wear beacon + shovel/probe depending on the conditions for the day...assessing the risk tolerance both in and out of bounds and what I'm gonna ski. Who the fuck cares what you do.

The guy skiing in the same zone as you that's buried. He cares. So does everyone around you that you're helping to rescue.

It wasn't my intention to lead the guy out of bounds but Jesus you're being anal. Red line is boundary. Blue X is Three-Way.

Not to mention, have you seen the Crystal side country lately? It might as well be in bounds as tracked as it is. Mother fuckers are traversing all the way from Chair 6 to Gunsight these days.

    Yes and yes--weird callout.

Padded seats loading tomorrow? I'm not going to make it up till next week, but here's to a beauty of a 21/22 season!

The point forecast snow totals for top of mt baker far exceed those for shuksan, thereby giving the ski area much more hype and cred.

Checking in for colorwayed milfs. Extremely disappointed in what I got instead.

I suspect the real reason is because Highway 542 was called the "Mount Baker Highway."

This was always my assumption. It’s at the end of Mt Baker highway.
