It needs more. Actually runs pretty well. Does leak oil. He could have fun resealing the timing chain guides. Also developed a vac leak the other day. I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. Maybe tonight. [emoji6]
It has been generally reliable though, so...

Haha. Not for the price that you can seriously command selling locally. I'm not joking. People are pay silly money for examples no better than yours. Pawn it off on some naive new transplant fresh off the train from Californy for $$$.

^^^ the v8 in that car was indicative of BMWs slow decline. Nice car, and nice engine, but... The m62b44 in that car is very similar to the outgoing m60b40 4.0l v8 of the e34. Key differences are the introduction of variable valve timing (vanos) and timing chain changes to accommodate the vanos system. This gives the car a flatter torque curve than the outgoing 4.0l.
To save money, they switched out the metal pulley and bearing at the bottom of the v for the timing chain and use a large u shaped plastic chain guide. They also switched from a dual width timing chain to a single width chain. The results of these changes are timing chain guides that break at less than 100k miles. To have a shop do the work it is a $3000+ job. And that is last time I checked like 5 years ago now, so probably more today. If the work is not completed, engine failure is in the future...
Otherwise, e39 540 are very nice cars. But those changes to the engine were representative of the shift of bmw to cheaper poorer build quality and it bums me out.

Engine issues aside, those earlier generations of BMW looked SSOOOOOO much better than the garbage they're pooping out these days. I miss 80s-early 00s BMWs.

I don't know how the team in Munich thought that engineering decision, combined with the Bangle experiment, followed up with a doubling down of whatever this design language is, was a recipe for success.

Sadly no. Some of these recent 5 series posts are making me wanna cry tho cuz I missed out on a white 1995 525 with a 5-speed manual. Looked super clean and in perfect shape but had what may have been a bad fuel pump going off the sellers description. Was asking $1500 obo. Of course the car sold in like 30 minutes. Every. Frikkin. Time...
