The semantics of that question have so many traps.

Are the Monkees the guys in the pictures and on TV, or are they the musicians who made the music labeled The Monkees?
What is a real band. There are musicians who made music, and actors who played musicians. Are neither a real band? Is a group of studio musicians constantly working together to make music for all kinds of entities a band?
Do "they" suck? Do the actors suck for taking an acting job to act like a band? Does the music that was recorded by studio musicians suck? Does some of it suck and some of it not suck?

There's a lot of parameters to define.

You can also rope in the totality of it all and say "fuck all that, it all sucks"....that wouldn't strike me as unreasonable.

Pleasant Valley Sunday is alright, if it came on the radio I wouldn't change the station. shrug.

Well, that's different. A lot of Monkee's stuff was recorded by one of the sixties greatest bands, known as the Wrecking Crew, a bunch of studio musicians in LA who made a ton of good records, the pinnacle being Good Vibrations. So, yeah, real band, real musicians (pre digital, pre drum machine, any machine).

This used to be available on Netflix. You can rent it on Amazon.

I learn a lot from that guy's podcast. Like Sonny Bono is the guy the Stones are singing about in The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man. Like, the actual guy.

Or that Daltrey was practically thrown out of The Who, but, the other guys realized they couldn't can him because they suddenly had super hits charting, and had to keep the lead singer on those recordings.

To continue on the Monkees tangent, I think Peter Tork actually could play, and Davey Jones(? is that right?) could sing. I am basing this off of something Mitch or Noel said after Hendrix had his aborted tour with the Monkees (Hendrix was the opening act, BTW). It was something to the effect of, 'we found out that Peter Tork was a decent guitar player (or bass, or whatever), and Davey Jones was...short.'

But IAS questions are some that I've spent quite a bit of time thinking about over the years, because the fact is that most famous, popular music people become famous and popular for reasons that have little to do with their own musical talent. Some of them are immensely talented, even if they 'suck' (Phil Collins has more musical talent than 99% of musicians have, for example), and some actually do suck (can't really play or write music). I guess the question is (which IAS kind of addressed by saying he wouldn't turn off that Monkees song), does it matter? I kind of think it doesn't. There are a lot bands/people who kind of suck who (with help, usually) produce a pretty good product.

edit to add: I don't think Phil Collins sucks, either, I just recall a number of people here years ago holding him out as an example of musical suckage. I don't like anything I've heard of him that he put out after the late 80's, probably, but the guy is really talented.

In the 90's nothing said "I'm an old very white suburban confused man' when people ripped on this new-fangled rap music as not being music. 30 years later, you are back with the same tired argument. You have had 30 years to to figure this out by yourself, buddy. 30 years. FTR, I hated rap music too when Beastie Boys dropped License to Ill but then I figured it out.

I have my preferences, pretty broad.. There's not much out there up on stage selling tickets that I can't find something positive about. Some of it I can only listen to for 10-15 minutes at a time though.. Many things I could listen to and enjoy all day long..

And then there's Yoko Ono.. I guess that's where I draw the line at "terrible".

And I'd take the Monkees over the Foo Fighters any day of the week.

The Elvis thing is like, just a weird statement... and I'd invite you to the three studio albums from Check Your Head, where they picked up their instruments again, threw say... Hello Nasty... So 91-98. Yes, plenty of samples in there, but so much unique and created by them (plus Money Mark, et. al) music.
And yeah, I'm straight faced.

My post followed a video of the BB, with Elvis Costello playing music. My statement was more about the definition of music than an attack on rap's worth as an art form. If all you got is a rhyme and a stolen beat I don't consider it music. Obviously, you can each draw that line wherever you want.

70s and 80s rock, hair band dude.. After giving it a shot I found an acquired taste for rap.. Hip Hop favorites of mine..
The Chronic from Dre and others, Tribe Called Quest, DMX, Cypress Hill, Beasties, MnM, NWA, a few others.. It definitely takes an attitude adjustment to appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm not doing that. Can't remember the last time I heard her, but it was decades ago and I'm still scarred. Poor John. WTF was wrong with him...how those other guys put up with it at all is beyond me.
