From done of what I've read, western European intelligence screwed up and didn't believe this was really coming. The German spy chief had to escape Kyiv by car because he got caught there when Russia invaded.

When Russia came back for the Second Chechen War in 1999 with Putin in charge, they took Grozny in a month with 1/2 the troop strength advantage and 1/4 the civilian casualties. He then prevailed against the insurgency over the next 9 years. It gained Putin a lot of political credit at home.

But Putin cannot pull a Grozny '99. I don't think the world is going to stand for a similar performance at scale. Even 50K civilian casualties in a first world metro is not gonna be a good look, much less 500K, with the power of modern media and livestream video. He won't be able to keep it out of his population's heads.

    Also, Ukraine is 40 Chechnyas.
I heard someone recently say they don't really think counterinsurgency is possible without war crimes, so it becomes a question of what people are willing to put up with seeing. That its Ukraine and not some far away country in the Caucasus probably makes this harder, unless something else comes along like a ship burning to shift our collective attention away.

It's interesting to see Chechen troops being sent to Ukraine.

US Intel was spot fucking on. We called it right on the money.

Hmm... I'd expect the Germans to have good intelligence, growing up staring down the Soviet barrel and all. Certainly they knew it could happen, or worse. Everybody knows armies roll across Europe now and then.

Probably like us in here, confusing what we want to happen with what may or will happen. I sure hope Putin's getting his ass handed to him - that doesn't mean he is.

If Putin uses thermobarics on civilians, I think that is the trigger for the risky "no fly zone" idea I had earlier... either that or just semi-plausible-denial attacks against Russian air and tactical rocket units by F-22, F-35, various stealth drones, maybe even B-2s. We have B-21s but not sure if they are combat ready...

Suddenly we wish we'd built the RAH-66 Comanche after all.

I’m now only able to stream one of the radio stations from kiev. 101.7… and it’s a lot of pretty dramatic talking and kinda heavy music.
I don’t speak Ukrainian, but I can sure pick up a vibe.
This is music you listen to in the locker room before a hockey game.

Wow I will never get over how surreal it is to see this unfolding over social media. That video is something.

Mom: How did you end up there (in Ukraine)
POW: They told us to go and we went.

Doesn’t sound like a man who is stoked to be there.

Probably so they can be transported on their own two feet rather than blindfolded and useless but they can't identify faces or places.

The wind is blowing the other direction

I think the people and governments of Europe are now rooting for the Ukrainian people. And ready to fight with them. To some extent. I’m not hearing anything about Russia starting a nuclear war

Every hour ever increasing military support, logistics and more is openly discussed

Everyone understands that this was a line crossed. Your in a fight start fighting now

The statement from the NATO Secretary General. Russia has broken the peace and stability of the European continent

NATO. Has activated the ??? For the first time since it was formed

There's countless videos that share the same theme - super young russians in captivity, all claiming they knew very little about the assault. Some saying they thought they were being deployed for a massive training mission and only finding out they're headed to war days ago.

    Tons here https://www.reddit.com/r/ukraine/

Yeah I’ve been doing a lot of doom scrolling on night shift this week. Watching Ukrainian 19 year olds pop out of trenches and shoot MANPADS at helicopters then post it on TikTok. Crazy shit.

I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Crazy is that one of the top rated “news” hosts is a white nationalist Putin apologist.

This Reddit feed has lots of current info that typically gets confirmed:
