That said I have watched massive well known companies go dark because of the same oversight. Wonder if they can get it all updated in one day?

The mags should send the home office a plethora of certificates from their collective professional circles.

Perfect. Obedience and compliance should inspire them. I've got a stack of useless paper I could send along as well.

Problem? Name another Olympic sport where participants routinely smoke and drink during competition!

Are black people less affected by regional accents than white people? I feel like I can clearly differentiate, say, a Boston accent from a Texas accent in a white person very quickly, but black people seem to speak more uniformly. Do you think that's actually true or just a bias from not hearing as many black people speak? And are we allowed to ask questions like this anymore?

I'm really struggling with skin tone having anything to do with a Texas vs. Boston accent.....

You don't think people deliberately use or exaggerate an accent to identify themselves culturally? I'm not talking about skin color specifically. Ever wonder why George W Bush has a "Texas" accent but Jeb doesn't? Or why people from Southie wear their accents with pride. Ever wonder why British pop singers have a generic American accent but American country singers from Ohio have a Southern accent?

I'm from Detroit and I can tell a Detroit/Chicago accent easily but I try not to talk that way--flat, nasal, whiny.

It's interesting - the longer I'm away... the more obvious it is.

I'll bet if you heard audio recordings of random Americans speaking you'd be able to identify their race in the majority of cases. Their skin color has nothing to do with it, but who they listened and spoke to while growing up does.

Agreed. I didn't even realize I had an accent when I lived in Michigan. Now when I hear someone with that accent I recognize it immediately.

Funny anecdote. When I was touring UofT with thing#1 and we were in the athletic facilities, I asked the guide if they had a dedicated curling rink with a straight face. Thing#1 was not amused, shot daggers from the eyes, and started hitting me in the ribs. One of the other kids on the tour brightened up and said oh that would be cool. Poor guy didn't know I was being a dick.

I suspect this is only partially true for a number of reasons. I think how people talk tells you about where their parents grew up, and where they grew up. I had an ex who worked very hard to lose an accent because she didn't like that it tied her to her parents.

Some of what you hear might be because it takes time for accents to develop in communities and there was the large scale migration out of the south after WW2.

I think that's definitely part of it.

Res isn’t there, but I’m surprised the iron range gets its own sub accent? but the UP doesn’t.

I don't know, you can listen to examples by clicking on the regions. I don't think this is settled so maybe there's a distinction with adding?

Also the image got grossly compressed when I uploaded it. The link's here: https://aschmann.net/AmEng/#LargeMap

It’s easier to make fine distinctions within the familiar. Explaining why Brits will notice dozens of separate accents within the UK.
The unfamiliar is perceived as homogenized. Which is why the question might be seen as eerily close to “All black people look the same”
