Harry - yes food is at Welch, come visit anytime as well as anyone else that is interested. Let us know you're coming and we'll have food and beverages. March is a terrific time to visit. The sun stays high and keeps the shadows off the hill. And when Welch puts bumps on Dan's Dive (after race season) it's get real fun and festive. Welch has a great vibe on sunny spring day.

The "Welch Belch" crew hit Illinois and Iowa this past weekend; we went to Chestnut and Sundown.

Chestnut was fun and I'd go back.....on a weekday. Lots of Jerrys out there this weekend skiing way over their head. We saw a lot of scoochers sliding their way down a few runs and more than enough yard sales. Lots of fun steeps and side hits at the Nut and the views are great. I was also impressed with their park, I like the set up and that it has it's own area and lift.

Unfortunately, our day ended when we came to the bottom of Warpath and saw a poor fella laid out cold at the bottom. I'm assuming he hit the fence. Not two minutes later and we watched a kid hit the fence with his face at full speed. Little guy bounced off the fence and flew a good ten feet in the air before thudding to the ground. Ouch! Lots of meat missiles heading down the hill late in the day. We called it after that.

Next day we went to Sundown with about 3 inches of new snow. Nice and sunny with little wind and not as crowded as I expected. We met some friendly people in the lot and the bar. They have a cool bar with live music, which is always fun. We had burritos and Coronas in the lot.

    Like I said, I'd definitely go back.....on a weekday.

Oscar the grouch. First one to miss had to buy beers for the crew.

Lol. Sounds about right. Village quad going down not helping. Chestnut always much better on Sunday but with Chair 2 down I'm sure it pushed the gaper crowd over to chair 3. Need to start a Warpathfails Instagram.

Amazing you saw 2 people bounce off the fence that hard. I can only recall seeing one guy do it after straightlining to yardage. He was okay.

Great contributions to this thread. Love the food stoke.

My 11 yo and I found a bit of dust on crust last week out west. Refreshing.

Subbing for some eventual discussion on potentially moving to the UP from Utah. Also posting a damn fun day at the Porkies. We’re Utards now but my girlfriends folks are from Ontonagon. West side was skiing great. Bummed to hear about the dnr clusterfuck and how they are taking over next year.
Borrowed gear, boots way too soft, skis real short. This ain’t Utah!

Nice! I have yet to make it over to the Porkies. It’s on the list every year but just never makes the cut.

Where in the UP are you thinking about moving to?

We have a pretty unique opportunity in Ironwood. Not giving out too many details due to some specifics and requests for it to be kept quiet, but we’re young(35/she’s 31) our big thing is going to be missing the mountains/west in general but we’d have summers a bit more free for traveling. The idea of being able to build something already great into a year round destination with community building aspects is of interest, as is getting out of the city/drought/wildfires in the west.

You should get to the porkies this season . Great tree skiing and runs (small, but mighty). Only open from Fri-Mon so all the snow from this week stuck around. dnr is effectively kicking out gogebic college from running it and somehow think they are qualified to run it but currently no dnr person can even turn on the lift. My girlfriends parents are done on patrol here after this year due to how they have treated the current manager!

I thought the dnr used to operate the ski area before? 1980s - 90s? It's been that long since I've skied in the porkies.

Good luck with your business opportunity!

Recent transplant to the midwest from Oregon here. We're still UP-curious but our current forward operating base is northeast Minnesota. I was looking specifically at a property outside Ironwood last year which is how the skiing in that area caught my eye. it seems to have a few hills. not bad.

They did. It’s a bit more in depth but knowing the current manager through my lady’s parents, the way they have treated the transition ain’t great and wouldn’t entertain offers for bids from some folks who wanted to turn it into a nonprofit. This is porkies level dnr, not state level decisions from what I gather, but the guy running the park has been telling the state that they don’t have anyone qualified to run the hill.

Friday was fun at Christie Mountain

Day started out bad, got stuck at a train crossing. Made me 20 minutes late for First Chair.

On my first ride up the lift, was surprised to find my favorite run totally untracked.

Made it to 11 runs before someone else put some tracks down.

Then headed to the Nordic trails for some cardio. What a great day.

I wouldn’t live anywhere else in the Midwest…. IAS is justifiably sour on the area, and I’ll grant that MQT is a weird town with a strange vibe. But the UP generally is a pretty cool place.

One of its biggest issues is its general embrace of mediocrity. If you think you’ll make a splash by setting the bar higher, you might. You might also piss away a lot of money and effort on a population who all too often doesn’t seem to get it.

Just posted but think I deleted it, oops.

Was that Ripley from earlier? How is it? Going up to Boho next week and going to hit up Ripley too as plan stands.

Snow chances aren't looking great. But still a week a away.
