Colorado BOH issues an emergency rule mandating COVID vaccines for all healthcare facility workers in CO.
The public commentary at the meeting was mostly painful to listen to. There was a good comment or 3 by a CMO and a CEO. I didn't get a chance to speak, the zoom line was too long. One lady claimed to be Miss Germany and ranted about movies and Bill Gates... she was amusing at least.
If I had gotten to speak, here were my comments:
*Introducing my healthcare background blah blah blah* practicing in the mountains for 17 years. I experience individual effects of COVID in ICU patients I care for with my own hands, and the big picture effects in the epidemiological data I review. I’m a libertarian at heart and strongly believe in individual freedom, but part of that belief is the ethical concept that nobody has the ability to impart risk on others and their community. Individual rights matter, but when it comes to communicable disease, no person is an island. We have a duty to safeguard our patients, colleagues, and the public. We have the expectation that our healthcare providers have immunization or titers for measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, chickenpox, hepatitis B, and the yearly influenza vaccine. COVID is currently a much greater risk, and consideration should be at least the same! COVID-19 vaccines are very low risk, but not completely risk free. We consider risk versus benefit. Vaccines are far safer than the disease that they so effectively offer protection against, even for those in the lowest risk categories for the disease. A few will fall have exemption for valid medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs. No organization should want to become the de facto employer of choice for those who simply do not want to be vaccinated. I encourage the board to vote yes. Thank you for this chance to comment.
