There’s a lot of shit burning recently and not in a good way: Carolina’s, Korea, Japan are notable examples.

New documentary from PBS about the recent conflagrations (this terms does not yet roll off my tongue)

Titled “The real story of the LA fires”

2,000 acres burning right now in the N Ga Mountains of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest and 0% contained. 5 crews and other aerial and ground assets fighting the Big Ridge Fire.

In all my years in the state I don't think I've ever heard of a big fire up there, much less in springtime.

Spring break trip to NC mtns has been delayed due to Table Rock and Persimmon fires. The development next to my old man’s house was evacuated early in the week, but so far his neighborhood has been able to stay put. There are three major fires in the area, feeding off the deadfall and debris from Helena pushing AQI to 500s in some areas. Crazy shit to be happening in early spring. Different kind of fire than what I’m used to seeing out west, slower moving and seemingly (hopefully) easier to protect structures and neighborhoods. Fitting because the flow of information is glacial compared to what you see for western fires.

Here in central VA, big trail run today on the AT was changed last minute due to fires near Humpback rocks. Fortunately managed to stay out of the smoke from that one. We need rain.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

Piece on 60 minutes about what the clean up folks in LA have to do to deal with burned up ecars and hybrids and powerwalls. Basically unexploded bombs. After the individual cells are out they crush them with a steamroller. (And yes I know steamrollers don't use steam anymore although that would be better than batteries.)Also how insurance isn't paying for intact houses to be cleaned and decontaminated. Sounds like folks are better off if their house burns down.

Its crazy how little coverage the fires have been getting in Atlanta, only a short 1.5 hour drive away. Looks like the much needed band of storms that came through have helped - now at just under 4,000 acres on fire and reports of 8% containment with 250+ people working to fight from ground and sky. Closures will affect the AT Id imagine as it runs right through there.

Links post like garbled junk so feel free to cut and paste:

Awful as this is exactly where Helene brought the most damage.

If you want to understand our wildfire future check out the book FIRE WEATHER. Great story that integrates climate change info into the wild and urban fire equation.

Bumping the new thread. Inn Fire on hwy three ninety five is still burning. Apparently, the highway is open with single lane traffic control. Hoping for the best for mono city residents.

Glad it’s open somewhat now. The detour while it was closed looked horrendous

Huh.... this didn't show up in my search. Probably because there's no space. I'll delete the other.

^ My go-to quick info source. Plus, I got the paid version which shows aircraft activity - I find that fascinating and informative as to the actual activity on a fire.

Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety early report on LA fires.
    https://agourahillsfsc.org/downloads...servations.pdf

20 pages, first summarizing the incident, then about different ways a fire confronts a house, energy levels, what fails, and what works.

    This caught my eye:
"During conflagration conditions, this intense energy is forced onto downwind structures, often overwhelming nearly
all construction materials and leading to uncontrollable structure to structure fire spread. Only as these densely built
structures experience the local variation in fire intensity can connective fuels and building materials compliant with
modern WUI codes impact the chain of conflagration. Noncombustible building materials alone cannot stop
    conflagration."

Responding to LSL's post--walking the dog this morning, watching a bunch of folks doing their defensible space and realizing that they're leaving the most dangerous fire threats which are the houses. 50 foot wide lots with 5 foot setbacks. When the big one comes we've got zero chance.

    Well, this is sad.
Wildfires destroy historic lodge on Grand Canyon’s North Rim, park says.
    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...odge-north-rim

I really preferred the North Rim lodge because it was old and funky, much, much less of a shitshow than the south rim. I liked the view better too, but I guess that’s still there.

Lots of tourists up in Tahoe escaping the heat wave. Some of them at a nearby campground decided to dump the briquettes at the campsite:

    facepalm.
