Lightning SE of Eugene OR has resulted in about 1000 acres burning.

Winds are blowing from the SW which explains why AQI here is now at 110.

I was really hoping to sneak in a trip just east of the crest between the smoke, but this last round of lightning may have blown that plan out of the water.
Yea…AQI is now 150ish in sunny Central OR
I can taste the smoke - a blend of fir, hemlock and alder…
Middle Fork complex about 100 miles SW of here is 12 different lightning starts. Eight of them are under control, the other four doubled in size today.

There’s another 19 lightning starts comprising 400+ acres about 150 miles upwind as well, called the Rough Patch Complex.

FWIW, my county's new evacuation system is not working like it should. i hope people are erring on the side of caution that are in or near the bear river canyon and the fire
You gonna start dropping trees - or is it burning away from you?
You and your family stay safe, BW.
Same fire SW of Colfax or different #RiverFire? Quote from Twitter:
"In an analysis we did a couple years ago for an insurer, the Colfax/Auburn/Grass Valley area was one of the highest risk areas in the state for a catastrophic loss wildfire. Which is exactly where the is currently growing very rapidly. DON'T WAIT TO EVACUATE."
Now showing as 1000 acres. They've been issuing immediate evacuation orders on the TV.

Town of Greenville, CA has been hit by the dixie fire![]()
I’m a long ways away from the River Fire. Sorry I wasn’t clear. It was putting out a lot of smoke when I took that photo.
There was a fire in North San Juan yesterday, which is much closer to me. It was arson, set by a woman. Apparently, she spent the whole day wondering around with a propane torch in her bag that was visible to anybody that she talked to. The sheriff was apparently called 4 times that day about her and they never made it to town to check on her.
The photos and videos from Greenville are sad to see. The incident command evening video update said that many residents there had chosen to ignore the previous mandatory evacuation and firefighters had to shift to life saving mode and evacuate those people rather than structure protection.
It looks like the River Fire burned into the community of Chicago Park, located between Colfax and Grass Valley. Extent of damage is unclear.
I was amazed Taylorsville was spared but likely won't be if that wind turns as expected. Saw a pic of a tanker truck driving down the streets of Taylorsville spraying water last week in the NYT. Winds supposed to pick up starting this afternoon. Might save Chester, though. Sure would hate to see Quincy burn.
Man, this is just bananas.
If I owned a house in one of those little woodsy California fire trap towns it would be getting renovated into a bigass fire shelter surrounded by portatanks and shiny ass ripping Mark 3 pumps.
“What’s the deal with the foil house with all those kiddie pools?”
“Fuck you and fuck these fires, that’s what”
If any of you sucking smoke indoors have a furnace, consider running the fan through an allergen or hepa filter to clean your air. I have two over the swamp inlet into my house and it makes a hell of a difference. You'll need a fan only switch or will have to rig one on the furnace blower.
River Fire continues to expand with 0% containment. 0 to 1400 acres in 12 hours. Colfax is completely evacuated. Hopefully they can start to get some containment and the winds don’t pick up. Sounds like the winds may temporarily switch from out of the south and west to out of the north east. Hoping that makes the fire double back on itself and die down a bit.
Edit - make that 2,400 acres

AQI in my little slice of Paradise is down to a mere 105 this AM.
looks like we have the Beckwourth, Dixie, River Complex (near Forks of Salmon, not the River fire near Colfax) in CA, as well as a bunch of new lightning fires in SW OR to thank.
Hopefully the forecasted showers will show up today…without lightning
