10 years ago I was a dyed in the wool BMW fan, loved em, owned a bunch of em and swore by them even as they burnt me (one to the point of factory buyback). Then after some time in the Volvo family I made the jump to Audi with my allroad. It has been one of the most reliable, and well-built cars I've ever owned. I got a bunch of different ones as loaners over the years and each has been consistently good with the only exception being the Q3, which I guess is fine for what it is, but I just really don't like cute utes.

I think there is a mindset that is hard to break among some that has nothing to do with the cars they've been making for the past decade (engines too far out front, timing chain tensioners, etc.), and that's understandable. Personally I think they're killing it and would have no problem buying another one.

One of my partners at work has the S7 and that thing is a an absolute hoot to drive. You could eat up a road trip really quickly in one of those.

You may be onto something. My brother used to be a Audi V6 guy, but he's a convert now to the newer 2.0T's saying they have just as much power as the old 3.0 (actually more), are more reliable, and have WAY more room under the hood to get stuff done. Way easier oil changes too.

However, I'm still not quite convinced that they've improved interior plastics quality though. Only time will tell. My A4 was straight up BMW or Dodge bad when it comes to silly cosmetic stuff breaking. At least old Audi parts are DIRT cheap these days, so that was good at least. Still. I no longer fear Audis. The newer ones do seem pretty good. I just can't stomach any of the ones with the fake tailpipes. Screw that.

The 2.0t was very poorly matched to the manual transmission. Yes it makes the same power or more than the 6cyl, but it couldn't get out of it's own way off boost, and then power would come on very quickly under boost so as a result clutch engagement was tricky in many situations. I also didn't like the way out front engine, the front diff is actually in the transmission if I recall correctly, and as such, the handling was just never very good. I tried by putting h&r and bilstein and upgraded sway bars on, and it helped, but it never handled anywhere near as nice as bmws I had owned. So I sold it and got another bmw and was instantly back to handling happiness. I agree on the newer bmws, they are crap as well. Wouldn't touch another post 05 bmw again. Fortunately the e30 and e34 are still running like tops with minimal maintenance.
If I had to buy a newer car, I have no idea what I would get. Nothing out there that I find very attractive from an overall package standpoint that would be better than my 540.
A good compromise and all around very nice car that used to have was an 03 E46 bmw 330xi with 6 speed manual. Silky smooth inline six, snappy 6 speed, all wheel drive (not as good as audis torsen diffs). Handled very nicely with h&r and Koni shocks. It was a very nice car. Build quality was clearly on the decline from earlier bmws like e30 and e34. It was light years better than my 07 Audi A4 2.0tqm with fewer miles that it replaced.

Never been a Corvette guy, but that's a damn good looking car, and the sound of that flat-plane V8 makes the pants feel funny.

Big engine 5 series have always been one of my favorite rides. I still have this one around, and it still runs, looks and feels great. OTOH, I did put $12k into the car this year.
I wish that BobMc was a bit closer, because the service dept at the BMW dealer in Murray is not too drawer.
2006 550i w/90k. I might sell it for $10k…but maybe not. One thing is for sure whoever bought it at that price would be getting a deal

Is it the rare manual trans model? I think they made a few of those. We liked our e61, did not like how much stuff broke on it. It was advanced level whack a mole. Nice cars though.

Last new car I bought was a 99 a4 2.8 avant.
Still have it, love the way it hugs the road, a balance I get.

We drove it all over WA, ID, MT, BC (left it for a week up on a logging road, had to dig it out).

I guess I've been lucky.

I loved my old 2002 (1971), but in snow it was squirrely and cold. So the a4 was a great upgrade.

Anyone ever been to the Exotics at Redmond Center they have every Saturday? Sounds like they have a pretty big turnout and limit it to only truly exotic cars (no '82 Corvettes allowed). Never been there myself but would like to eventually.

Fun weekend up on the AT and enjoying late summer in the N. Ga Mountains. Got in some time on the trail, a camp next to a mountain stream and giant waterfall, caught up with some old friends, popped into a winery or two and did some driving on the most excellent roads this side of the Mississippi. I highly recommend this zone to anyone with a car or bike (motor or not) that wants to enjoy some seriously great tarmac with scenery, views and more twisties you can shake a stick at. The car spotting is off the charts too.





And I turned 29,500 on the old girl too.
