Was looking at my 86 4kq today , sort of mid way through a rebuild on it - stalled when college tuitions started coming due.

Yeah, it had and still will have plenty of quirks but nothing , I mean nothing grips the road like the locking diffs - that little lightweight body with the right power in it can be a blast to drive.

Won’t argue anybody who’s had issues with em, I understand.

Has anyone ranted about the Audi fox? Or the Audi 4000 or 5000 series? Fucking shit boxes.

You wouldn't put all three of those in the same category, would you? Asking from minimal first hand knowledge. I only watched some cousins suffer with a Fox for a brief period before being suckered back into the Renault fold. Even given the irrational family dynamics, the Fox must have been pretty awful.

The 5000 was a nice highway cruiser until it broke and needed expensive and unending repairs.

The Audi C5 allroad makes a lot of these lists. I have an '04 I bought new. It was a job getting it to 100K but it's been pretty good since and is now at about 150 and doesn't get driven much. It's a great car in a lot of ways, comfortable, good-looking, an absolute tank in the snow, great ride on the highway, I plan to keep it until it dies. Which might be the next time I start it but it seems pretty solid for now.

Back when it was killing me with things breaking, I bitched about ti to my mechanic and he said, "well, what do you expect from the most complicated car ever built?"

I still like it but the only tool in it is a screwdriver to take the tags off if it dies. One of the turbos has been leaking for about 5 years, if it goes that's it.

Funny thing - im about to pick up an 01 allroad. Customers car he’s finally done with. Nowhere near nice or modified as yours - still a 6spd. May swap trans into my a6 4.2. May keep it... not sure.

After working on my B6 A4 with the 3.0, all I gotta say is there is no effing way I'd try and mod something with the 4.2. Working on my V6 was bad enough, but I've heard the models with the V8s are REALLY hell to work on. HOWEVER, if you can pull that off, you'd totally be a hero here. That'd be freaking awesome. I just know I wouldn't be brave enough.

I just did a full throttle body service on mine. Had to pull the unit and they REALLY cram that bastard back there. Never had a car that shoved the throttle body between the engine and the firewall before. I can't imagine with the V8... On both my other cars, doing that service takes like 10 minutes. On the Audi? Nope! It's like a 5 hour job. Haha. Now I know how these things can bankrupt people who have to take them to a dealer for servicing. Sheesh.

I had an '85 4KQ that was a good car for alotta miles... how many I'm not exactly sure, because the odometer was broken.

That car was simply superb fun in the snow.

But Dog help you if anyone ever rolled down the back windows. Took a couple sacrificial chickens and some other assorted witchcraft to get them back up.

My first summer home from college I drove an early 90s white Le Baron turbo convertible with blue Corinthian leather and a digital dashboard. Got it in a trade for some used tires. If you were too hard on the gas and you’d get a POWER LOSS message on the instrument panel. I hope I have a picture of it somewhere.

Between the drugs and reckless driving, I'm surprised either of us survived.
Hauling down I-95 with a brown bag of black beauties, 357's and White crosses at 67mph was indeed reckless I assure you.
Every car since has been way cooler...

Manual trans - that top gear was really tall once it started rolling.
Same color as the chevette above - seemed like a perfect cue to add it in. I think I added up all of the cars I owned once it’s was quite a list from the whole spectrum...

MontuckyF - the 4.2 is shoehorned in for sure easier to drop engine trans complete and go from there.
I have been sorting an 01 out for the last year and it’s proven to be ridiculously expensive-so many sole source parts priced way too high....

Love the car though. Sucker for a v8 in smaller chassis -And those fenders...

Loved my Audi 4kq. Still remember the name of the guy that t boned me and totaled it 20 years ago.

Only one window switch worked so I had the wiring harness exposed so you could connect the switch to each window and roll them down. That helped with the reach through to open the back doors cause the outside handles were toast.

Thing would do donuts in the snow like the front was attached to a pole. Perfect, endless circles. So controlled in the snow, but the locker could get you into trouble. I’m convinced I’d still have it if not for fuckface Joe from Kansas.
