Where to spend a few days after picking up the kid from camp near New Bern?

Had planned on just hightailing it back to Lowcountry after the pickup, but I think we'd like to do some low key exploring for a couple days in those parts.

I'd prefer beach and/or cool little towns (like New Bern) where we can decompress and get a debrief from our son before he locates his electronic devices and forgets all about his sailing and camp adventures.

The maritime museum in Beaufort was pretty cool (15 years ago at least).

USS North Carolina museum.

Any boy who doesn't like battleships ought to be in a dress.

New Bern is a cool little town. I was gonna suggest Beaufort as well. Emerald Isle is my favorite NC beach zone (and Atlantic Beach by proxy, though to a lesser extent), but might be tough to find lodging this late.

Thanks mags, all added to the list. Got a line on a place at Emerald Isle for a night and might slow roll it down 17 towards Chas taking in whatever we find - like battleships.

South Port is a cool town.

And Bald Head Island. I cannot stress this enough.
