Yup. 5 yrs is generally an accepted rule. Some manufacturers will run a test protocol for you if you send it in.

I particularly liked the "we should all consider"

    But he hasn't.

Good call out on that note. Is there some kind of resource that can tell us what transceivers may be out of date?

Obviously this isn’t the thread for this discussion but something we should all consider.

My ortovox is about 10yrs old.

3rd or whatever n buy a new one ASAP. Someone else said it but I feel like five years is replacement time.

This whole thing is terrible. Now the Utah thing. Turns out I knew one of them pretty well. She was 26 years old. Pretty distressed right now.

If I'm reading the full report right, the group decided at the hut they weren't going to ski this feature? That was the biggest thing that jumped off the page for me, aside from the terrain trap/burial depth issues.

It is hard to know from the summary provided but it almost seemed to me like spur of the moment skiers 1,2,3,4 just charged ahead into the lower gully underneath the Nose despite the talk at the hut and typical protocol to regroup.

My guess is large group dynamics. Even though some of the party discussed at the hut not skiing the feature somehow that changed or some in the group acted without discussion.

This is how I read that, or maybe they didn't realize how low they were until it was too late.

I hope you all read the articles by Colorado Sun about each of these guys. One would only hope to accomplish so much as young men as these guys. Tragic and hits me hard as if I ever settled down I would want to be integral part of a community like these guys were.

The two photos of the gully in the report were a kick in the gut. I had wondered about what the sides of the gully looked like (i.e. possible to ski up them to safer regroup/exit zone) as CalTopo shading of steep microfeatures is limited.

Those pictures will be in my mind anytime I'm skiing near gullies/streams in the backcountry. Thanks to SAR and CAIC for these reports, they make a huge impact on education.

4-5m is as low as they got on the beacons, damn. That's the true gut punch, all hope gone, moment.

Vibes to those who knew them. Be safe out there mags.

And also.....why did they continue to ski down the gully underneath the Nose, putting themselves farther from the hut? Why not stop on the knoll at the bottom of the skied area and skin back toward the hut from there? Was there another ski objective for the day?

Hey man, this is weird, but I'd like to politely request that you change your signature.

In this time of mourning for the greater ski community, I feel like the tone of my stupid joke that you sign every post with is currently really misplaced and is a big distraction from your otherwise measured and wise contributions.

Because the lead riders made a mistake. Rider 4 tried to get them to abort.

I think the report said he was yelling to ski the other side of the gully where it was less steep. There is no mention of a guide in the report, I thought I read in here that there was a guide with the group.

    Thx Norseman for the callout(s).

My biggest takeaway from the final report is that this incident is a very tragic reminder of just how challenging making decisions, communicating, and traveling in large groups really is. Hut trips with a large group of good friends is one of my favorite things in skiing and I've certainly experienced those challenges first-hand.

My biggest take away is what the hell prompted them to enter the gully?

That thing is terrifying and directly below the slope they decided not to ski. I’m at a loss.

There are many questions that may or may not ever get answered regarding why this group behaved the way they did. Personally, accidents alway make to reflect on how consistently conservative and awesome we need to be at all times to play this game for the rest of our lives.

They were gonna have to at least cross the gully to get back to Opus hut at end of the day. That said, the large group dynamics I think are the best way to understand the decisions that put multiple people in the gully at the same time, for any extended period.
