That's a clearer way to state it. Thank you. Either way, more testing = more "confirmed cases", because we have no way to tell false positives from true positives!

    Chinese Rat Flu

SAw a video where a ER Nurse said this has been circulating for months, and reminded us how so many had the flu and bad coughs all of January. Makes sense because there was at least a month of Travel from China.

Last month I had a temperature, flu, and after 2 weeks went on a hike and almost passed out from wheezing etc. ended up in urgent care and on steroids and a z pac. My GF was just sick, but I’m a type 2, so it was hell for me somehow.

    https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/17/...reliable-data/

The data collected so far on how many people are infected and how the epidemic is evolving are utterly unreliable. Given the limited testing to date, some deaths and probably the vast majority of infections due to SARS-CoV-2 are being missed. We don’t know if we are failing to capture infections by a factor of three or 300. Three months after the outbreak emerged, most countries, including the U.S., lack the ability to test a large number of people and no countries have reliable data on the prevalence of the virus in a representative random sample of the general population.
This evidence fiasco creates tremendous uncertainty about the risk of dying from Covid-19. Reported case fatality rates, like the official 3.4% rate from the World Health Organization, cause horror — and are meaningless. Patients who have been tested for SARS-CoV-2 are disproportionately those with severe symptoms and bad outcomes. As most health systems have limited testing capacity, selection bias may even worsen in the near future.

You can dismiss this if you want, because it's MSNBC and Rachel Maddie. Sigh. Did anyone catch the guest she had that was talking about data from a smart thermometer? I didn't see all of it. It was interesting. It sounds like this company has been able to map influenza spread in the past with a high degree of accuracy and about two weeks ahead of the CDC. Therefore, they have been mapping potential Corona spread by subtracting historical influenza data. I wish I had seen the whole thing.

Damn. One of the residents of the place my FIL lives died from the virus. Hey scrublover is there any way I can get some info on who it was? We just want to try and figure out if the person is part of the group he hangs with.

That’s interesting. In a world where our iPhones can track how many times we flush the toilet you would think a smart thermometer would be of benefit to society.

I work at the family store and gas station, and had to tell my mother, who still thinks she's going on her annual month long vacation this Sunday to St. John USVI, that I could no longer come Into work because we're 8 months pregnant and have a 2 year old and the risk of working with general population everyday isn't worth the health and safety of my family. She didn't take it well, Im basically out of employment and as a family member.
she's a trumptard cultist and a has been slow to take this serious and thinks it's "overblown". Things have been simmering between us for a long time due to her blind allegiance, but it really came to a blowout.

The fucked up thing is her only concern is her vacation and she hasn't shown any Concern for the safety of grandkids or her daughter, my sister, who's also expecting mid-April. It's completely selfish that she doesn't care to be around to help us, or leaving me to run a store during a pandemic with a vulnerable family at home. We've tried to talk sense to her, but she won't listen, she's 70 this July and her boyfriend has diabetes so going to a small island with limited care probably isn't the best policy.

Fuck her, and I told her as much.

So, it looks like we're pretty screwed here in America, with the delayed response, and the most obese population on Earth with all the maladies that brings.

Maybe why 38% of hospitalizations so far in US are age 20-54.

Obesity, Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, then add Sars-CoV-2 to the LRT.

A friend called last night and wanted to stop/stay at my place on his way home to Missoula from CA where he'd been wintering. I politely refused much to his surprise. He's a doctor in his 70s. He should know better IMO.

Meanwhile I found out last night W2 has 48 people waiting on results. Oy vey.

I don't know, he's likely too old to make the drive nonstop in one push, and if you're doing your part to minimize social contact(it sounds like you are, not trying to sound like a scold or skeptic), it seems reasonable to think that he would be safer staying with you than in a motel somewhere.

His best bet would be to stay put, but if that isn't an option and he has to get home, I think he was wise to ask.

I wonder if lung damage from vaping could be contributing to the higher number of young people?

Also curious, maybe Mofro or Summit knows, do Hospitals and Health Depts, etc, have to order the test kits from Thermo directly? Is there a backlog in ordering? How many labs are out there that can handle BSL level 3 test processing with real time PCR units or can the pathogen safely be handled at BSL-2?

Thing is we just don't know. I have been trying to minimize but have had to go out many times.

What about him? How careful had he been? He has already demonstrated to me a lack of appreciation for the situation.

I have an elderly mother who has no one but me. She is currently in lock down at her senior residence. I need to be able to bring her supplies.

What about my farm animals? Who is going to feed and water them if I'm in hospital?

Yeah, and in the absence of testing kits hospitals send many of the sick home where they infect relatives. Spat's argument is we can't test *everybody* because of false positives but that was never the point.

Test availability allows health care workers to respond to at-risk people with testing making treatment and isolation possible versus flying blind and being forced to send suspected cases home.

It's the difference between tracking the infected using data and extensive tests when the pandemic is at an early stage thereby allowing the economy and health care system to function versus bringing the economy to a standstill and overwhelming the health care system.
