I have #4 sitting around for this. I don't know fuck-all about it's over penetration potential, however I do know it's easier on my bad shoulder so I have shot a bunch of it.

Is my choice of a home defense weapon technically flawed? Is there a better load that 00's for the task? I live in a very dangerous environment. Perhaps you would suggest a better tool for defending against home invasion. Thanks.

50' away from my sliding glass door is the main highway for crazies, mentally ill, meth heads and 2nd Amendment, liberal hating armed citizens cruise by every day. Then there are the bears and lions walking in the yard. Police response time is a joke. A CIC telling his people that I am the enemy and need a "2nd Amendment" solution. Reading this thread about everybody else arming themselves with non hunting weaponry. You guys have convinced me that I've been a fool for not having the means to defend my family and myself.

Is that your professional recommendation or are you busting my balls? Nttawwt. Did you get a chance to mount the Solly brakes that I custom made for you? Stainless steel 130's with the custom stoppers? Good luck with your business move.

He could just record a days worth of chit chat and play it on a loop outside his house on a loud speaker. Nobody could make their way through that. That neighborhood would look like Chernobyl in 2 days.

Been there, done that. We're done with dogs. Never loved dogs myself but I've had a dozen and some were ok. There's a black pit bull on the couch with me right now that we're watching for a week and he's a nice dog that chewed up the inside of the owners car. Even with training he'd let the bad guys in. He doesn't even bark at the people and dogs walking 50' away past my kitchen door. He could give a warning maybe but he lets bears and coyotes pass through the yard at night without even a little grrr.

At one time I was a pretty good shot when I was shooting targets and squirrels out of trees but I sucked at running rabbits and pheasants. Now with the cataracts, a Glock is a no go for me. The sawed off would make me feel safer.

What's the pattern look like at 10-15 feet? Maybe sawed off at 15 is about the same as legal at 40 yds? What choke? I donno.

By "sawed off" do you mean the traditional term of a short barrel or do you mean a pistol grip (with the stock cut off). The former is perfectly acceptable, the latter is pretty useless.

Besides that, here's my worthless opinion:

Provided you mean a short-barreled shotgun with a stock and loaded with 00 buck, I'd say your defensive tool is a perfectly fine choice. So is a pistol. So is an AR.

Poor eyesight doesn't matter. Any bad guy in need of killing will be so close that you won't be aiming a pistol or AR anyway, and the spread of a shotgun isn't going to gain you anything. We aren't picking off commies at 400 yds like Hathcock or anything.

Any load capable of doing the job is going to over-penetrate. Yes, given ideal circumstances birdshot will kill a man; yes, a .22 will kill a man with ideal shot placement; no, I don't personally want to be shot with either of them. But in a worse-case scenario of a big dude wearing winter clothes with his big fat arm between your muzzle and his heart, you can't bet your life on very small calibers or light bird loads to stop the threat. Anything capable of stopping the threat will punch right through drywall. Don't accept nothing smaller than .9mm, nothing smaller than .223, nothing smaller than 20ga w/#4 buckshot.

All that really matters is that you have a firearm from a reputable company (dependability, reliability) that you are wholly comfortable and completely familiar with (shoot it at the range a little bit at least twice a month). Keep it loaded and unlocked. Put a fucking light on it for fucks sake.

Thanks. 12 gauge with a shortened barrel for the win. I knocked down a squirrel with running hip shot using my 24 1/2" Stevens LS but that was a fluke. Short weapons are tough to aim in a fight for life I'd bet.

A Mossberg 500 can be found as a bundle with a 28” barrel and an 18.5” barrel. Kinda 2 guns in one.

Like I said, the Remington Tac 14 or Tac 13 are short barreled options.

My still-worthless opinion is that a shotgun is not a deathray, even with a short barrel. At self-defense distances you still have to aim the thing (see a couple pages back for a good graphic regarding the spread of various loads at various ranges). Aiming is impossible with a pistol grip. The only good reason I can think of to have a pistol grip (besides the fact that it certainly looks cool) is so that you can fit the whole thing down your pants when you go to knock over a 7-Eleven.
