Damnit, The Crime Dog fell off the ballot this year. A deserving player overshadowed by the Balco crowd. Would the 7 dingers he easily would have gotten in the strike shortened season really have made that much of a difference?

I think McGriff was a lot like Rice in that the last decade of his career was pretty forgettable. Walker is similar to Evans in that they were still all star quality players in their mid-late 30's. Walker also had one legit MVP quality season, even with the Coors inflation. I think Walker is hurt by the Coors inflation because people incorrectly assume he wouldn't have been great anywhere. They're wrong. He was a consistent force in Montreal before the steroid era was even in full swing.

4 in the top 10 WAR, mvp votes in ten, career on base of .377. Maybe you just weren't listening to the conversation?

What an injustice

McGriff was a blast to watch and I loved his style of play and how intimidating he was at the plate. I personally couldn't vote him into the hall if I had a vote but he was a damn good ball player. Way above avg. But I see your point because I see Dale Murphy as a HOF player and others don't. Murphy had 2 MVP's, 7 all-star games, led the league in homers and rbi's a few times and was just a killer in the 80's. He had a beast of an arm too. But he was basically held to the 80's with one injury year.

Dale Murphy was a fucking stud. 2x MVP? Maybe the most feared NL hitter in the 1980s? Yup, first ballot (for me).

McGriff never in the top 8 feared hitters at any point in his career. Maybe he should have juiced (if he didn’t, which is up for debate).

murphy led the league in home runs twice and no other categories. both years he won the mvp, a team with mike schmidt would have won more games. if anything his awards just make writers look worse. very good player but not exactly raising the bar either.

paving the way for bernie though and whitaker with the veterans committee.

also mcgriff did lead intentional walks once, which puts at least a ding in the ‘not feared’ argument. he just needed a mazerosky moment or 7 dingers, either one and he’d have a plaque after three votes.

Actually Murphy led the league in RBI's twice, runs, total bases, walks, OPS, slugging %, games played, won four Silver Slugger Awards, and five Gold Gloves. Thats with me not including his 7 all-star games and MVP awards as well as being nominated other years also. The home run leading years were not in the same years as when he led in RBI's. So he was a dominant player for the whole decade. I agree Schmidt was likely the most feared hitter in that time though. Schmidt was a badass and intense. Murphy didn't have great teams with the Braves but they were fun to watch. Plus he was considered a nice guy and not seemingly as intense or scary as Schmidt. But yeah Murphy was easily amongst the best of the 80's.

they aren’t a straight comparison but the eras a pretty similar since mcgriff didn’t debut until 86 and it sounds like we can both agree that schmidt was much better than dale murph.

but if you have a guy in the hall that is so clear (schmidt) wouldn’t someone much worse be borderline? and then you make a case for someone demonstrably better in a fairly similar era i just can’t see the lack of support, the writers just have to suck.
