I hope I don’t regret not getting the SuperGoats! I just hope they charge as hard as the protest.
I certainly don’t feel that my C&D’s charge any less hard than my BG’s... don’t over think it. I haven’t found anything yet that my C&D’s cannot do as well as my BG’s. But I also haven’t tried the C&D’s in heavy, wet, day-after mank or cut-up super-skied-out chop either; which is where the BG is really stupid fun. They charge hard. I pushed mine hard on Monday in 2” over crust and they were surprisingly great, even on the groomers where they felt only slightly different than my BG’s in how my patellar tendons were sore due to the width on a groomer (= not ideal). Keep them in soft snow and/or fresh days and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Over think it... This is TGR... Holy shit the last several posts from today are a riot... I have no idea how you could not ski any of the skis made by ON3P in their conditions would not kill it...

If you like easy going jibber skis that can still be "pushed" go Kartel... If you like more traditional skis that you can drive go Wren... And depending on the conditions you ski the Wren and Kartel are made in a width for the condtions you ski... If you want a pow or a cut up POW skis than just go with the magical Billy or C&D...

Way to much over thinking... I own the SG, 116 Kartel, OG 191 Wren, 186 Vicik, 108 Wren and 98 Wren and they all kill it... All I love, but each one has their place in the quiver (like the Wrens more than the Vicik, but cant let the Vicik go)...

I’ve been skiing both. Buy the C&D, keep the goats. Don’t break TGR again.

Thanks for the encouragement! I will sleep better. They arrive tomorrow, just when the storm cycle stop.

    thanks!

Can't wait for some more info on these new rippers, as they will probably be replacing my k108s over next summer or whenever they become available Then again, it is not like my current quiver is lacking - at all in fact.

    yep...

in fact, i just skied some '12 BG's i picked up off gs this summer for the first time and...gosh what a ski

first two runs the learning curve was out, third run i was arcing the biggest longest turns i could muster, and having a fukin blast! lapped the basin area rest of the day over a mix of fresh, soft crud, trees, tracked out, you name it...all with excellent results, thanks iggy

With that said, the BG absolutely charges.
1.5 flex SG absofuckinglutly charges like it’s no thang.
Flex 4, Enduro core, 187 Protest. Compared to 12/13-ish (early RES model) 186 BillyGoat. The BG is more stable in long radius turns in all types of snow and especially more stable in choppy snow.
The Protest is "faster" in pow (duh) because it's 12mm wider and planes up faster. That doesn't make it charge harder. Put it on a wide open slope and IMO the Protest prefers a shorter radius turn than the BillyGoat.

I'm not slagging the Protest, it's a great ski, floats great at low speeds and in lower angle terrain, and pivots effortlessly. I use the Protest as my backcountry pow ski and the BG as my inbounds pow ski and both are perfect for those uses.

The BG is better in chop, that 128 underfoot is the drawback there and that’s it imho.
Interesting as on a big open slope the ProTest doesn’t care if it makes super giant turns or none at all with zero fucks given and with no effort. Total charge balls to walls. I actually get really giddy rolling into a big steep section of untouched pow when on the ProTest knowing I’m going to just crush it.
The faster in pow for me is that it is more frictionless in the turn and accelerates out of the turn better.
It’s really awesome how many good skis we have to choose from that we can argue the small nuances of each one as it pertains to rider interpretation of each ski.

Starting the day on the wrens was a mistake. Off the top was breakable wind crust over 6-8” of pow. Mid-mountain trees held 3” of fluff on a supportive crust and in exposed areas and lower mountain consisted of zipper crust over hot pow/mush. Wrens were good in the middle third, but SG slayed it all with ease. [emoji869]

This must be a 192 vs 187 thing. I'm light and the 187 is a better ski for me 95% of the time, but it absolutely wants to come across the fall line a little more than the BG, for me. I suspect a lot of that has to do with the more forward mount point, though.

Possibly but I never had that feeling on my 188’s. Straight, big turns, small turns they also didn’t care. The 4 flex is a much better ski for me over the stock 3. I was really surprised and elated how it allowed the 192 to mob chop so much better than the stock 188. Not as well as the BG, which I’m fine with as I have Lhasa for that. Those things kill chop just as well as the BG if not more so.
I am mounted -2 on both ProTesteses.

Also interesting, I only mounted -1. Which is great for what I use them primarily for, skiing backcountry trees after it snows. But I'm sure I'd like -2 better in wide open places

Alright, reading all this stoke has got me fired up on some Wren 96 (maybe 98 if I can find a good used deal). These would be replacing my 184 Icelantic Sabre 89s and 188 PB&Js as my low-tide skis in Crested Butte. The Sabres dont get much use and pretty much just sit there until the spring, and even then the PB&Js are still more fun with their playful profile. It would be nice to narrow the inbounds quiver down to a ski for no new snow, and a ski for fresh snow (currently 188 Salomon q115s but hopefully 190 deathwishes soon). Unfortunately it doesn't snow in Crested Butte like it does in the PNW or Utah or Cali, so I spend more time than I would like skiing firm conditions and bumps. The PB&Js leave a lot to be desired on firm groomers, and the mount point (mine are at -5.5 from center) is a bit too forward to really ski well (for me) in untracked (I tele and get tip dive on the rear ski in heavy snow or <6"). If the mount point was more traditional, I could probably deal with the groomer performance, but while I like to pop of of everything and throw a few 1s and 3s, I rarely ski switch for more than a few turns and never hit rails. The more directional wrens seem to check all the boxes, but I am on the fence about the length. I am 5'11" 170lbs and will be spending a lot of time on these skis in bumps, trees, and the techy steeps at CB. I was initially thinking 184 since my 188 PB&Js are really closer to 186 and the Wrens are a true 184+. My gut says to go with the 189, partially because thats all that is in stock for the new 96, and partially because I do love to open it up and rage when conditions allow. However, similar to discussions earlier in this thread, I want to buy the ski for the conditions I will ski, not the conditions I want to ski. So as much as I love stomping drops and straightlining the runout, the 184 will likely be adequate for that, while being better for the steep techy trees and bumps that make up the majority of my skiing. Just overthinking everything as usual. This thread is so dangerous, I was thinking aout getting some C&Ds there for a minute...
