That place is solid for ramen & they have some tasty, original sushi rolls.
Ate at Kobe tonight for first time, due to recommendations here. Awesome. Preferred the ramen over jinya. Sushi was good too. And no wait at 7, where as jinya is always a wait. Thanks for the heads up. Highly recommended.

I felt for Mom's last night. They were absolutly slammed, had one table get up and leave before ordering while I was there. Called in my order, was told an hour, showed up right at an hour and had another 20-30 minute wait. Was the case for the other to-go order that was there waiting as well. Food was ok, but won't do holiday take out there again. Much better to hit mid-week when they arent slammed.

    All,

Thanks for a spectacular thread. So much info here. I am heading out to take my son on a UofU college tour tomorrow and spend 5 days at Alta/Bird. Never been. Can't wait. Just have to keep son from jumping off of anything bigger than a house...will be a challenge.

Here's the list of have of restaurants - all gathered from this thread. Staying in Sandy, will spend time downtown and near the University. Don't need fancy. Just 4 of us. Rather find cheaper eats, but would be cool to have a fun area to go to a few nights. Family loves all kinds of food. However, still maybe missing from the list is a good burger place or two, and I often work for the beer industry so I'd love a suggestion for a brewery or two with great IPAs and decent food.

Anything I should definitely add or subtract? Anything I've missed in the Sandy area or downtown? Thanks all!! And of course feel free to PM me any skiing hints I need to know...

    • Red Rock Brewing
    • Mokis
    • Layla
    • Pretty Bird
    • Laid Back Poke Shack
    • Trio Cottonwood
    • Porch
    • Epic Brewing Tap Room
    • Mom's Kitchen
    • Kobe
    • Makan Makan
    • Jinya (I know it's a chain but looks good)
    • Desert Edge Brewery? Do they have IPAs? / Stella Grill

Finally, we tend to bring sandwiches and then buy fries etc to supplement on the mountain. Any particular place at Alta/Bird that will work well for that midday?

Squatters is a decent brewery with pretty good food. Might be worth checking out.

The Pie is a Salt Lake landmark. The one by the U is the best one.

Apollo Burger is a good place for a fast food burger after skiing.

Alf’s is probably your best bet for mid-mountain meet up if you have mixed skill levels as it’s reachable from the beginner lifts.

Awesome suggestions thanks. Freaking kids now charge harder than parents so all areas of mtn are on the table. Alfs sounds great. Any other more inaccessible ideas are also welcome.

I think Kiitos is now my favorite brewery in town. They have a mix of styles, although you can only drink 4% beer there (higher strength stuff can be bought from a to-go cooler - their IPAs are all good. Shades of pale, Epic and 2 Row are great too (note that shades is 21+ and 2 Row is to-go only, but you’ll see their beers at other places too). Red Rock, Squatters and Wasatch are more family friendly with solid food and have a wide variety of beer styles, some of which are good and some are more mixed.

Red Iguana is also really good

Fisher is an awesome brewery with really nice people working there fwiw. Not the most adventurous spot in town in terms of the beer, and they only do 4%, but it’s my favorite of the breweries to actually hang out at.

Yeah fisher is cool too, I should have mentioned them, they have a great vibe and solid beer. And they usually have a food truck if you’re hungry

How do you guys feel about Chedda Burger for some fast greasy burgers? have heard good things. Need at least one good burger place.

Also, were any of you guys in a gondola at Steamboat last weekend? Similar advice hear to a couple I was talking to from SLC on the lift...

If you’re looking for a good burger check out Lucky 13 downtown. Best bacon burger around.

Edit: nevermind, I forgot you need to be 21 to get in.

    Burgers are legit though

Edit: becee, I’m a U alumn. I always put all my classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays during spring semester so I could ski five days a week and worked weekends at Alta. Even graduated on time still! Not sure if you want your son to know that or not it was a great school for skiing though, along with solid academics and good sports.

I'll tell him for sure - great story. Kid needs the motivation. B student, but not outstanding at this point - certainly could be trying harder. Running out of time to get the metrics where they need to be to get in. If skiing 5 days per week is what motivates him, I'm cool with that for sure. That's one of the points of the trip. He's an outstanding skier, and thankfully not a park rat like some of his peers. Utah skiing is exactly what he wants.

Fuck, if I need to fling myself off shit that is bigger than I'm comfortable with now that I'm in my doterage, and that experience gets him pumped enough to work his ass off on the SAT/ACT and high school, then I guess I'm jumping. A whole different kind of mandatory air.

    Haha. Shit.

Also, you guys rock for all the food suggestions. This is awesome, and thanks.

Unfortunately in these short 434 posts I'm pretty sure every half way decent eatery in Utah has been named. Good thing the skiing is great.

Downside to good food and less access to outdoor activities has me 10lbs heavier since moving back to NY. Lighter in the wallet too. Can't ski as much so I'll eat my way to happiness.

Plenty of food options at Alta for midday. Most popular:

    Mid-mountain:
    - Alf’s (grill food, hot chocolate, usual)
    - Watson Shelter (see above)

    At the base:
    - near Sunnyside lift/Albion parking lot: Albion Grill (same as all above)
    - near Collins/Wildcat parking lot: Goldminer’s Daughter (esp nice apres, nachos/pizza etc, also an upstairs indoor seating area with big windows overlooking mountain)
