Just catching up on this thread, can you tell? For some seriously good authentic Chinese food try Moms Kitchen, just north of I-80 on State Street. Don't go looking for sweet and sour chicken, it aint there.

randomly: had the nashville hot chicken at hops in ATL and frankly like pretty bird better. been going to pretty bird so often they know my first/last name and have comped me a meal... summertime getting fat ftw

There's at least four Indian places I can think of. Plus an Indian market on 7th East around 87th South. Two Vietnamese places.

I actually ate there yesterday, they had a good lunch buffet. It’s called Gurkhas.

We could start a whole new thread on SLC breweries but they keep just getting better.

It is a good thing we aren't friends in real life I have a feeling I would weigh 500 pounds! I am looking forward to trying Saffron Valley in Sugarhood, I love watching Lavanya's empire grow she is a fantastic human being. So proud of her and what she has accomplished!

Templin is new, very chill spot to hang, dogs allowed in the large back patio area. I liked all the beers they had when they opened, and it looked like more is coming. Kiitos strong stuff is awesome, Fisher is great and very chill, Saltfire has some good stuff but their head brewer just left... not sure what that'll mean for them. There's a nice little brewery crawl option now from Epic on State (just redid their space a bit and now there's an actual bar you can actually drink at, which is nice) to Proper, Kiitos, Fisher, Templin... and that's just in my neck of the woods.

Fwiw Desert Edge has a new cheap eats menu with a bigass bavarian pretzel, fries, etc and their pitchers are $7 all month.

Eats related, Freshies (the lobster roll food truck) opened a b&m on 900S, east of 700E. Absurdly overpriced, even by trendy Utah standards, but if you have to scratch the itch, it'll do. A bit heavy on the mayo/butter relative to the real thing but it's still good. Great chowder too.

Edit: can't remember if I mentioned it but the Jinya in Sugarhood is pretty decent too (never been to any other Jinya location though so cannot compare)

Does anyone eat in the 9th and 9th area? Whether it's the tea shop across from the paisan market, Veneto's, Freshies, they're all good.

    SLC Eats

    Yes yes to Pizza NoNo.

For plant based needs, Boltcutter down in Gallivan is really good. I like meat, but still find myself craving that place.

Not sure if I’ve mentioned It’s Tofu in lower C-Wood Heights/Union Park zone. It’s a hilariously bad name, but it’s amazingly Korean. So good.

Tradition in Liberty Wells is great.

Kiitos has the old school combo video game machine and a bunch of ok Pinball machines. I’ve been breaking a sweat on Galaga fairly often in recent weeks.

Beer Bar added some stuff to their menu. Still mostly sausage based, but the Bahn Mi Brat thing was fucking awesome. Best fries in town.

Yeah 9th and 9th is cool. My only thing is I want to like East Liberty Tap House so bad, it's the closest "pub" to me by walking distance. But I cannot... overpriced, something like 4 taps, limited menu, filled with snobs... 9th and 9th needs an actual bar (as opposed to an alcohol-serving restaurant), otherwise it's a killer little neighborhood. Alamexo Cantina has decent mezcals. Pago is great. Mazza is probably my favorite spot there.

Yeah Boltcutter rules, same owners as Buds iirc, which also rules. I'm pretty fuckin far from being vegan with my weekly fried chicken fixes etc but those places are just damn good. Both are super reasonably priced too, especially Boltcutter for a sit-down spot. Buds buffalo "chicken" sandwich is probably a top-5-salt-lake-valley sandwich for me, and that's a pretty fuckin competitive list.

    I still must try Tradition...

Joetron at this point it's statistically unlikely that we haven't drank at the same spot at the same time at some point lol

The food at desert edge and stella grill (basically the same restaurant/owners) sucks in my opinion, very mediocre.

Freshies won a world championship for that lobstah roll, son.

oh man, I love the food at Desert Edge. I pretty much always get one of the specials, but it's usually great and reasonably priced. I wouldn't get the mexican stuff there (iirc that is the only stuff they microwave), but everything else I've loved. I am suuuuper partial though because I've lived near there for 3+ years, all the bartenders know and take care of us, it's nearly a second home at this point. summertime post-camping-weekend sunday nights getting back into the valley at 8:30pm, wanting dinner... it's always the Edge. probably going there tonight lol. same owners as Cafe Martine, which is also outstanding I think.

Freshies is good, just too greasy... the world shouldn't be voting on lobster rolls, only coastal Maine (I realize the competition is in Maine lol)

But ffs $25 for a lobster roll? I know you gotta ship it but damn. Heading to Maine tomorrow actually to get my fix... hope it snows in my wake

How long has it been since you've been back to Maine? I paid $23 for a roll on the Cape this past summer, and prices continue to rise, at one point MP was over $26. I'll happily (rarely) pay $25 for one here to scratch that itch.

Teleee, right? Its hard when you're on a budget but the one thing you hastily throw your money at is craft beer and good food.

    SLC mag foodie/beer meetup?

The coolest thing about Freshies (apart from the good eats) is that Ben, the founder, is a ski bum from Maine. For years, he patrolled at The CAN. Then, he went on to manage an organic farm in Park City. He has a friend in Maine who ships him the lobsters, which he started to sell at the Farmer's Market and then the Park Silly market. Next, he opened a place on Sidewinder, and finally this place on 9th. BUY LOCAL. Support a fellow BRO!

This is exactly how I feel. People seem to like it and it has a decently interesting beer list...but it’s sooo expensive and it’s never really clicked for me. The interesting beers are twice as expensive as they should be. I’d pretty much always rather go somewhere else. They also just changed to a bar license so kids can’t go there anymore, fwiw.

Have fun in Maine! I’m jealous. I’m actually from the same town as Ben. The skiing here is much better but I do miss the beer and food.

I think I’ve only had freshies once so far. It’s definitely good, very close to what I would have back home, but yeah the price really turns me off. The touristy places in Maine are similarly expensive, but there are good hole-in-the-wall places that are cheaper and just as good. Plus you can always make your own.

Has anyone used one of the local SLC places to order or buy live lobster? It seems a little strange to me, but I guess it’s not that different from buying fresh fish.

Just go to the Asian world market in Sandy on 9000. Live and they run specials. Always market Street too, they sometimes run a take home special and they do all the work.

In the '90s, my wife and I spent a winter weekend in Bar Harbor. What fun. I remember eating lobster rolls at a local dive, with great fjord views, for about $4/roll. Great rolls, fantastic slaw. I miss the coastal NE ...but not enough to ever want to live there.

Today, we will have lunch at The Laid Back Poke Shack in Murray. Good eats!

Speaking of Murray, we found this place if you are in the mood for kick ass Ramen.

Jinya is good, but for my money go to Kobe in Holladay. Mike ( the owner) spent a year in Japan work in a ramen shop to dial in his craft, I seriously crave his ramen!
And he is a skier and solid dude!

Late 90s coastal Maine, some random bar, 2 1.5lbs full steamed lobsters were $16 and came with a beer. How times have changed. Phall did say "the cape" so prices are likely inflated where he was (tourist area) but still.

Went for lunch, will be back. Split the twice-cooked pork belly, cold sauce beef shank and tendon, garlic green beans, and cucumber salad with a coworker. Tough to choose, so much of the menu looks great.

I have dreams of their three sauce chicken, kung po chicken and shrimp. My coworkers mediocre Chinese food next to me is driving a mean craving.

Tried MakanMakan. Goat curry and fried rice were great. Really looking forward to trying more stuff. From the outside this place always looked like some kind of Pei Wei ripoff, definitely not.
