Get Down with Down (skis)

Started laying out my mounts last night. Found rusty screws on my px18 on the heel i ripped out of my old skis last season. REI boned the mount and tried to hide it. Didn't even use glue in the inserts and probably why they pulled out/ruined the skis.
Thinking p18s on the countdown and px18s on the showdowns though the brake width on each work better flipped. Any harm in cleaning these screws up and reusing? Or should I try to source new ones? They're the mega long rear px screws.
Mounting my own fucking skis forever now.

Screws are fine. Surface rust. Pick your rust cleaner and give em a scrub

And check before you mount -- I believe the PX18 is the racing heel, not the regular PX/SPX heel. It's a different template.

Thanks for reminding me. Planning on checking the template on a 2x4 before mounting to make sure i got the PX template. I looked and checked it was the px/racing template but still want to be sure since you cant really see through the rear heel holes.

Pretty excited/puckered. The Senecas are of the larger variety for sure and the biggest ski i've been on to date (significantly larger than other "195s" i've skied). Based on how fast they were, both the 196 lowdown and 202 showdowns make me nervous already! Super excited for the 202s. I've never found a ski that was truly stable under me at speed being 6'6"+ 250lbs.
I used to intern at Seneca when i was in school at MSU helping do some manufacturing. Amazing skis that are meticulously made. Don't know what's up with them anymore. Last time i checked Eric had sold the company.

It’s not too narrow. It’s perfect — and deliberate. The radius is like 40m consequently. They don’t catch and are UBER predictable. I love it. Inbounds yeah, give me a fatter tip and some radius so I can carve.

For comparison, go look at how Hoji designed his skis. It’s identical. I own 4frnt ravens and ld102s and the shape is the same. Like almost down to the mm.

Yeah i just did some quick comparisons. My favorite shape in terms of predictability is the XXL. If i pair that shape down to a similar width its VERY close to the SD 202. Why did i never notice that before? So 122-102-109 for the LD for touring sounds pretty perfect. Don't know why i am/was so fixated on the 130> Tip.

The 202 showdowns say to pull 890mm from tail. This is a full 4cm back from the line on both skis which seems waaaay more off than I expected. The boot also seems very forward in the camber of the ski. Like a monster amount of tail.
I'm sure I'm OCD overthinking and should trust the 890mm and go.

We may. The TD is selling pretty well this year, and may warrant a longer length. Will keep the dimensions in that case, not change them (which we did on the 172, 99mm waist).

That seems like a huge discrepancy. I'd probably wait till SiSt or one of the other Down Boys chimes in before mounting if they were mine.

890 corresponds to -12 cm from true center, which is where you want to be.

4cm of is ridiculous. All markings will be revised like the ones on the TD from next season onward.

I mounted mine at 880mm (43.3%). 880mm was perfect for me on the 2017/2018 SD105 so I hope it will be the same for the 2018/2019 one. (With Dalbello Panterra boots and S920)

Straight tape.

But if you normally prefer a more traditional mount, there are no issues with going further back.

Awesome thanks. I'll do the layout tonight and see what that looks like.
I guess I expected boot center to be more centered in the camber versus forward on it.
Can't wait to get on these things.

I always freak out about mount points since I mounted a pair "on the line" and it felt like I had no tip and a huge tail.
At the end of the day I probably won't notice where they're mounted as long as it's in the right ballpark and they're even.

I talked to SiSt yesterday, hoping he'd advice me not to buy any more skis that I won't get to ski much. Last season brought me the 202s, this season brings me the CD114 Bimboes version. Fuuuuuuck. Finally have something useful to put my kickstarter gen Cast/916s on, though, so all is well. Review coming in three months or so.

89 is the way to go, at least on my last year's models. Not a chance in hell I'd be going further back.

I ended up mounting at 880 and it felt great today. Don't think the 1cm changed anything too much but didn't want a massive tail behind me. After my first few runs and not remembering how to turn I got my legs under me and they really clicked. Never felt so stable on a ski. Can't wait to get on my cd114s.
