Made the dumbest possible fuckup by drilling the first four holes for my mount with the paper template facing the wrong direction.....
Fortunately there wasn't any overlap, so I just plugged the holes and started over. Good to go now.

Bonus points for drilling on the coffee table. Good incentive for double checking your drill depth

Anyone have any input on the best solution for temporary plugs? I want to put my new shifts on skis (that currently have bindings on them) for a period of time and them move the shifts over to new, yet to be acquired skis and then put the current bindings back on. Hoping to not deal with inserts and just reuse the current holes at a later date. Can I use the cheap plastic plugs and some glue and then remove at a later date without messing up the threads?

Yes. Drill them out with a tiny pilot hole, then pull them with a small drywall screw a few threads in for leverage.

Had to drill out some plugs, but all holes were in good shape and reused.

    Thanks AC!

Pretty sure I know the answer, but don't want girlfriend to stab me. I'm going to do a handful of mounts with inserts this weekend. Any reason why I should start with the bit width for the inserts? Are smaller pilot holes helpful?

Recommendation is to do a full regular mount, make sure it is all good and square, and then expand those holes to take inserts.

I don't do inserts yet, but that's my plan when I try my hand at them shortly. Plugging an insert hole is a good bit bigger than a regular binding hole.

Alrighty, that makes sense to me. Guess I'll need to pick up a mounting bit this week.

I start with a normal ski bit because it's easy and I'm more sure the bit will track into the divot I've made.

#1 most important thing with inserts is to mount the binding with machine screws right away before the epoxy has set. Being even 1mm off can wreck a mount with inserts while 1mm with a normal mount is unnoticeable. If you get the binding mounted when the epoxy is still malleable, you can get away with being a teeny bit off because the insert will align itself with the screw. Saved my drunk ass more than once

This is extra extra true if drilling and tapping by hand.

Side note: I've found tapping cleanly and vertical way more important than using a drill press. Seen plenty of insert jobs affected by bad tapping. Never from hand drilling.
