Whatcha gonna mount on the C&D?
PS. Hit me up if you ever have an interest in swapping for 191 BGs or 186 Jeffreys. Both also with veneer topsheets. I'd love to try the C&D. 303 alpine bsl.

This is interesting. I was going to ask if anyone has compared '18 (or year prior), 184 or 189 108's, to the new '19's hand flex and if they felt much of a difference? I know Blister has and I totally respect Jonathan's opinion/take on most ski gear but was curious to know if the 19's are that much stiffer in tips/forebody/tails of the previous gen as he indicates.
Those C&D veneers look incredible.

retro ftw!
Fauuuck, I wanna stare into the grainy depths of those dreamboat veneers, pretending to shrink down, flying and weaving through the very fibers of the tree, its vitals, its body... twisting upward, accelerating through each narrowing branch until finally bursting forth from the leaf and into the brilliant canopy. The bookmatched Hallway of Enchanted Craftsmanship, so beautiful as unmounted virgins, which no binding could beautify. Maybe black hammerheads; black pivots... but only in the way that a black dress clings to womanly curves.
Next to those godawful motherfucking ugly classless grizzlycorns. Kmart skis. When's the next topsheet contest? Sigh.
Went to Wolf Creek this weekend and got out on my 179 Wren 98's. I had checked the base, which turned out to already be flat, but did a base grind anyway, to be sure. Tuned edges to 1.5x1, aggressively detuned from about 1" in from contact points out to tips. Headed out to the mountain with a file and gummy. First few runs were ok, ended up detuning even more aggressively, i.e. to the point that the edges on the rocker sections are basically rounded over, and the edges between the contact points are near dull. Now they ride awesome. Just maybe wish they were the next size up. Surprising just how much I had to detune them, my Brahmas are less hooky with a much sharper tune, not sure what that's about. anyway, in their current state, they rule for my style.

Mmmmm, book matched veneer C&D's.
Tasty-cakes; what wood type?

Hey - glad to hear that a heavy detune helped. I believe I mentioned this before, but we're now fully detuning on a high speed motor all the way to the start of the running length. That is a lot more length than most people have traditionally detuned, including us in our early years. Historically, when we started building, we were generally detuning about 2.5" in from the end of the sidecut. We're now going much longer on our heavy rocker detune and more aggressive on the effective edge detune, as that is where we are finding our skis ski best.
One other design element we are exploring is the height of the edge off the snow. Compared to the edges on other skis, at the same 1 degree bevel, the end of the edge off the snow with a 2.5mm wide edge is between approximately 15-45% higher off the snow (when flat, compared to edges in the 1.7mm to 2.2mm wide range). That design aspect is something we're actively discussing (in terms of detune), but what we do know is that our skis like to be heavily detuned in their base state - and that that detune level is generally a lot more than most techs & skiers are used to.
If you ever need additional help with the skis, don't hesitate to reach out.
Soon. Just working on the platform.
This was off of an REI tune, so suspect the edges were very sharp.
Seriously, this can’t turn into yet another ON3P thread....
That's interesting Scott! At least I think it is. You saying you suspect different characteristics based on edge height, even between two skis that have the same tune? That would help me feel less dumb about not being able to figure out how to tune an old set of wrens I tried.

A dude I work with that has been working on skis for years and years and used to tech for race teams says he thinks it’s because the Wrens are possibly *too* stiff laterally/torsionally. But I have no idea. I’m a pro at making custom solid wood furniture, not skis.
Third and final quiver update for the coming season - a pair of custom stiffer kartel116s in 181cm length - with some BG-graphics to fit in with the BG crowd.
These are the ones that i am the most excited to use, of the three new pairs (which says a lot as i already love w108s and am super excited about w114s). Will be mounted with shifts.
The stiffness/flex of the pair is quite nice - the extra backbone compared to stock k108s will probably make em more versatile, especially as the stiffness is still nowhere close to wren88s. I think they will be an awesome daily driver in one of my two quivers (2x 3(/4)-ski quivers) - the one for the more snow rich location. I am sure they will do a lot of things very well - properly excited!![]()
Sweet, congrats
Im asking this.. not telling and not acting like I know what I’m talking about..
I have seen other companies say that when they put thicker cores, bases, and edges on their skis, that they sometimes ski like shit..
I’m wondering, if with your stuff (not that they ski like shit obviously, a lot of em are my favorite skis!) if they arent absolutely perfectly tuned, with those thicker materials than normal, can it feel “off”? To be honest, I have bought a few new On3ps that feel “off”. I have never had that problem with too many other skis (other than Moment Night Trains), out of all the skis I buy. I have had a few brand new On3ps that feel “railed”, when they actually arent. Sometimes a detune helped, sometimes it didnt, other times I didnt even try
I love to keep my edges sharp as shit, but I cannot do that with any on3p other than BGs..
I want to finish by saying, I would support you in anyway I could. I love On3p, and I love where you sit among the ski industry, and the style of skis you make. You are unlike anyone else, and I really respect that. I would buy $10,000 worth of product from you if I could. I feel like only felt these issues because I bought so many. I havent bought half as many skis from any other brand as I have from you. Maybe besides K2 lol. Next year the obsession will start again. Viciks, tychoons, 191 Wrens and BGs are all some of my top 15 skis from the past 6 years. I am going to keep coming back to you in search of that specific feel you offer, when I match up with a pair.

thanks man - things will be pretty sorted on the equipment side of things. Now i just need to be worthy /grow a pair![]()
I spread the photo updates out in time to add some more photos to the thread over time instead of all at once - as i for some reason love looking at photos of killer skis. So party people - keep em coming![]()
Damnit, double post
Kid-kapow.
Did you add extra carbon or 22oz fibreglass? or both?
I went with just extra carbon to keep the weight down, but gain a bit more stiffness/chargability/hard snow performance. They did come out a fair bit stiffer than k108s without being super/w88esque stiff, which is what i wanted.
I do not know how much of a difference there is between 2018 k116s that had 22oz fiberglass as standard and these 19oz (standard for 2019) + extra carbon to be honest.
