The addition of Crystal is huge. It has me thinking of picking up an limited Ikon since I have family in Calgary and SLC to use the resorts there with weekly skiing at Crystal. I wish they had night skiing. Maybe it will pull people away from Alpental (I can dream).

I assume he and Mrs K will stay on... I'm sure he's making a ton from the deal. Maybe he didn't enjoy his own cash being at risk as much as he thought he would.

The Ikon pass thing will suck from my perspective. Don't want more people there. And I likely won't use the Ikon pass elsewhere.

I hope the competition between Vail and Alterra results in large expansions of lift infrastructure and resort footprints at Crystal and Stevens. Finally we have some companies with deep pockets to fight the enviro brigade.

So if I'm getting this right I could have bought the Ikon pass that now gives unlimted, no black out access to Crystal for less than I paid for a Crystal season pass (even during the spring buy early sale)?

    Sweet.

In the Alterra vs Vail side of things, this statement will seemed interesting. If they can pull it off, they seem like the better bet.

At each destination, Alterra Mountain Company leaders are empowered to be decisive, creative, and bold in order to retain each mountain’s authentic character. Recognizing the innate value of the unique culture found at each of the mountain communities, Alterra Mountain Company’s goal is to preserve, sustain and support its two most important resources: the mountains and the people who live and play in them.

Yes. You should probably complain and get an Ikon base pass instead.

I don't really want or need the other Ikon benefits though... just a no frills season pass...

Not that it's a huge amount of money in the scheme of things but having bought the Xtal pass in the sale before prices went up to full rate.. I'm mildly pissed at the deceptiveness of it.

Extra benefits will be announced to Season Pass holder when sale is completed.

    .... that's nice.

Yeah, if you had an Ikon pass the only excuse remaining to skip BBI would be the lack of a Soup Du Jour.

It's the aversion to events not the need for soup.

Anyone with rental property near Crystal should be feeling pretty happy right now.

If things stay the same, I'll be on board when I get moved back to Montana (this year?). 5 days at Big Sky, a week long trip to SLC, a few days at Jackson, trip to Seattle to visit the brother. Add in cheap tix to Snowbowl and Whitefish to round out the weeks. Makes sense to me.

Market is pretty damn strong at the moment I could rent my place every weekend of ski season If I wanted to and I get maybe 20 inquires a year for season long rentals for CMAC families.. where price doesn't seem to be a problem for them. I guess it might lead to some mid week business. I'd still prefer it that fewer people were going to Crystal... this isn't going to improve the experience.

The biggest boon to rental business has been the summer ops since the gondola went in.

Talking of summer maybe these guys will push forward with bike park which for some reason JK always seemed reluctant to do...

It seems like the lower mountain at Crystal would be extremely well suited for a bike park... plus on the right season you could bike and ski the lifts the same day, which would be super cool.

Yeah, I bet that'll happen. The setup is too good to ignore... the gondi is prime, way more vert than Stevens. I bet in two years the place will be full of new trails and will be a Bike Destination .

I think if they did it right, Crystal could easily compete with Whistler bike park as a destination. Which strategicly could make sense in the Vail vs. Alterra battle.

I think the only hold back could be the "elk".

"If they did it right"? You know how long it takes to build a bike park like Whistler's? How much $ needs to be invested? Then compare that to the amount of revenue generated by bike haul tix. Just saying, if it's anything like the places here in CO, you might not want to hold your breath.

    No...

It'd be great but not anywhere close or really a "destination".

Nope. Whis has waay too much infrastructure to even be mentioned in the same breath. Hotels and restaraunts, like it or not, differeniate destination resorts from ski areas looking to extend their revenue season. A bike park at xtal will compete with Stevens / Summit bike parks, and maybe with Whis after another 20 years of continuous development at xtal.
Move upside and let the man go through...

    So what’s next?

I’d love if mt bachelor or mt hood meadows was added. My guess is Sierra at Tahoe is next as they’re probably eyeing a south Tahoe resort.

Since I didn't buy a season pass to the White Pass this year, it looks like I'm going to go ski some midweek days at Xtal with their addition to the Ikon pass.

Ok, I chose the wrong words in my last post calling it a potential "destination" ... but I think it could become quite popular for Puget Sound mountain bikers if the mgmt puts some weight to it.

    Meh, we'll see.

Still not sure what to think about all this fucking conglomeration.

edit: mofro beat me to it

You guys think Mt Baker stays off either Epic or Ikon for good?
