The vet told us we were going to have to put this guy down immediately a few weeks ago. "His lungs are filling with blood and his heart rate is just compensating, he'll be dead in a few hours we should just put him out of his misery". This was while my dog was wagging his tail, walking around begging for treats and loving all the attention. I decided to get a second opinion and our regular vet the next day. He said he looked OK but keep an eye on him.

Don't really know what happened, still on edge that he could bite it any minute, but enjoying every minute that he's alive now. (That's shallow water, I don't want to have to swim out there if he passes out).

    Sorry for your loss.

There is nothing on earth better than a bird dog.

I've had my 13 year old in for multiple vet visits this week. Blood draws, lab tests and trying to decide on surgery or let it run its course.. had a year with him we didn't expect last summer when this first was one trauma too much for an old dog.

I fucking hate that now it's a question of is today the day when I will know..

He's snoring happily with his head on my knee right now.. and it's killing me that there aren't too many more nights I get that privilege.

Quote Bromo: You were a damn good dog and a better friend.

Isn't this the truth? Life has pitched me a bunch of curve balls in the lats decade. Without the fur kids around, not sure if I would have made it. I love my two so much that the thought of them leaving has me in tears.
    Sorry for your lose Bromo.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

He even chased birds at the park on his last day. I wouldn't call it running, but he pursued at his own speed. Even organ failure wouldn't keep him from a nice quarry. Here he is in happier times, on the lookout

For what it's worth... my wife and I have lost two dogs in the last 18 months to cancer, and it's been absolutely heartbreaking. They were a part of the family, like so many of the dogs posted here in this thread.

When we lost our first, Talley, we made a really nice hard-cover book that was all about her: her story, pictures, memories, things we'll miss, etc. It was SUPER hard to do, but I absolutely love having it around the house. We did the same thing for our 14-yr old black lab Yoshi that we lost back in May. There's a little bit of closure in making the book, and at the same time it allows us to always have those memories. We used Blurb for both of them, and they came out awesome. Not expensive at all, either. Here's a little screen shot from Yoshi's book:
