Last year John Kircher bought Crystal from Boyne Resorts. No idea how this would impact Crystal being a part of the Ikon but it would be a Crystal decision not Boyne.

I was unaware of this until recently, were there problems within the Kircher family that prompted the sale?

Having a family pass at Brighton, I am not very thrilled about the increased traffic this will cause in BCC.

I can’t see Baker ever going with Ikon or Epic. But who knows these days. I’m pretty excited to see how things shake out this season. People act like either pass is a death sentence. But like I said, the number of skiers isn’t increasing. These passes will just spread everyone out most days except when one resort reports a little more snow than the others. That’s gonna be funny to watch.

I think the Australian resort was already added, but Taos is new - happy with that addition.

How long before these smaller resorts realize it's not worth the commitment of being on these passes? It lessens the value of their own season passes, and they'll get such a small cut of the Ikon Pass revenue that they'll be kicking themselves in a year or two. But you know, the grass is always greener.

I think for a lot of them, they'll try to make it up in F&B, parking, and rentals. So expect those prices to rise. I usually BYO food and beer anyway.

Yeah I’m mentally preparing to treat the weekend traffic like lcc traffic. Definitely gonna be trying to get to the mouth of bcc 30 min earlier than I did last year

Well, Ikon screwed the pooch a bit and spoiled their announcement. New spots are already on the map on this instagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bm_MzBdB...brightonresort

    Tremblant.
    Blue Mountain.
    Boyne resorts in MI.
    Cypress.
    Snowqualmie.

For a place like Taos, they are probably happy just to put butts in the seats. Last I heard, they were one of the few places with substantially more skier days back in the '90s.

And for almost all these places, the marginal cost of extra skiers is next to zero. You're already spinning the chairs, staffing patrol, and heating the lodges. It's a small hurdle to get over, and if you piss off the regulars with crowding, the bean counters will tell you that's a nice problem to have.

    What do I win?!?

This is excellent news - it completely covers the storm-chasing possibilities for Front Rangers, north/south/west.

Since everyone in Utah will be getting an Ikon pass, I think the smart move is to keep your Alta or Snowbird passes as there will be less traffic up there.

    Please?

    Agree. Hmmm except I have a 3-year-old and a 4-month-old. I can’t get everywhere in a season I guess. Someday!

Damn, I was kinda hoping Taos would go Epic. Maybe next year.

Pretty weird these passes this year. Seriously, it's going to be crazy to have every mountain in the world on one pass or the other. I wonder how long it'll be before they start jacking up prices beyond what we want to pay, or breaking these into hundreds of different ala carte passes. I mean, how many of these mountains is the average skier going to visit in a year?

    The last additions should be:

    Snoqualmie,
    Cypress,
    Boyne/Highlands

based on the fact you can see them on the pins in the background of this post...

Future Pass prices will be based on some algo measuring profitability/cash flow vs price. Monopoly pricing won’t work.

I buy passes for convenience and opportunity as much as cost savings.

What I came to realize last year is that it's all about variety and choice dependant on conditions. Nobody is going to ski all this shit, but, if you have the time, you can pick and choose when the time comes. Last year I was in no rush to travel west, since most of it sucked, and the east was having a better year. But, after that stupid deep freeze in Vermont in the beginning of January, then your typical 50 degree thaw, I said, fuck this, and drove to Montana. Utah was still awful when I was at Big Sky, but, lo and behold, when I dropped down to Jackson for a few days, Utah finally gets some. Benny drives south real fast and gets some of that. Then I come back east and catch Sugarloaf in Maine for the best dump of the year. So, don't make plans right now, just be prepared with all those tickets. And Booking.com.

Don't forget about Liftopia in all this. Big bargains sometimes.

Yeah, I had Mountain Collective last year and only used my 3 Jackson days because everywhere else sucked. Obviously the ability to be flexible and travel affects everyone's decision. Best case scenario, I'll be skiing about 7 mountains on the Epic and buying tix at maybe 3 different resorts. Total around 60 or 70 days total. I feel like that's pretty good.

Uhh, March 2018 in Tahoe was possibly the best ski month of my entire life, no exaggeration. 20 days of blower pow and cold temps between storms. You should have come out and used your Squaw / Alpine and Mammoth days.

Woulda shoulda coulda. Plan was SLC, Jackson, and Sun Valley. Trips to T-ride and Aspen. Tahoe wasn't on the list because of travel time, and March is kind of a no-go for me with work. We are more day-trippers most of the time with 1-2 bigger trips during the season.

I’m pretty sure every month of the 18/19 Tahoe season is going to be exactly like March ‘18. Also my right side is never going to fly open and put me in the backseat this season either.

By this time of the summer I am always wildly overestimating average snow conditions and my skiing ability.
