IAS lacks the ability to differentiate between forum banter and real life. If you can't do that then you most likely don't need to read the threads in the padded room.

Rethink my approach? Some grown man gets all bent out of shape over some posts on a forum and Its somehow my fault that he can't handle the internet?

This is the same guy who supposedly put me on ignore. Which was a lie obviously. Jumped on the band wagon of trying to make fun of me. Backfired. And now posts a huge butt hurt rant about rich and poor people.

As much as IAS might want to blame someone for his current situation, it's definitely not any of my doing. I don't even know the guy.

No one makes him come to the Padded Room and no one makes him click on this thread. Some accountability would go a long way here.

You are a pretty big whiner too so that's not surprising.

So many complainers here. No one gives a shit. Everyone has shit they deal with.

Today you made me give real consideration to the idea of walking into our local Lexus dealership and making a career change.

Im kind of tired of construction work for $40/hr. How does it work? All commission? Do I have to wear a suit and tie? Im not a car guy but am a quick student.
Yeah car sales is all commission. Typically its coat and tie or slacks and a company polo.

Good luck and let me know if you have any specific questions. Its a hell of a lot easier than construction work.

Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

My issue is me....One day I think I can look at a bunch of amazing cars and fantasize about having enough money without that eventually causing me any harm. Another day, all of it has sunken in and it bums me out so much. It's my own posts (I posted a few things wanting to see "hey, did you ever have this....hey this is what I'd buy if I were rich), it's my own inability to deal with losing.

Anyway, being presented with more examples of the sickness of how this world works sinks in in ways I don't have a lot of control over. We have a sick juxtaposition in the modern world of half of us being raised to value teamwork and graciousness and the other half being raised to value winning at all costs.

    Anyway it's a toxic storm....for me, because I can't handle it.

yesterday after I typed that, I had to go drive my shift. I passed the US Ski Hall of Fame 4 times, nobody there, had a blind guy who got on the bus with the idea that the bus driver would just walk him into the store and help him shop, so I had to leave the bus and seek out some way to leave this guy alone in Walmart so I could get back to doing my job--it's just gut-wrenching. I listened to a guy make phone calls trying to figure out a place to stay because he'd been kicked out of some place he was staying, and then he begged me to drive him way off route (miles) to the homeless shelter but I couldn't because I can't just take the bus off-route. So he limped off in the cold.
Yeah, income equality, it's nobody's fault. In that world, to those people, I'm the Bobby. It's just the sickness of the world and the frustration of sensing how wrong things are...the wrongness of what these systems value. That's what pains me.

The thought that plagues me, personally, is: I can clearly visualize what I want my life to look like, and I can clearly, rationally know it's not going to happen. You have a moment when you're climbing and you have to accept you've run out of time to make the summit. The issue becomes defining what is minimally acceptable, and I'm often hovering around that line. I spend a lot of mental effort concocting comforting bullshit for myself so I can withstand it....there's a lot of it here. People making 4 turns on some little hill are "skiing the backcountry"....I live near the beach! But at some point it will break down and you go "the water's 35 degrees and there's black flies attacking me...this isn't Hawaii. You can't even afford a bus ticket to Milwaukee, let alone Hawaii."

And yeah, dude has been on ignore for awhile, I see posts quoted, I override the ignore thing out of curiosity (shiny cars). It's like when you rubberneck to see the accident then you see mangled bodies and wish you hadn't. I want to see the shiny cars, like a fucking child; and the injustice of it all pains me, like a broken middle aged man. That's the essence.

It's not just "the bobby", it's also that I watched a bunch of comedians in cars getting coffee. It's the same process (for me, internally). Jealousy is toxic, but even in my middle age it's very hard to control because it seems to take place at some level below consciousness.

Anyway, these Bobby's cars threads have proven to be very toxic to me. I guess that was the point. Maybe Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous isn't a healthy thing for poor people (or just me, I don't know) to view.

Sometimes I think this way too. I have problems with depression and isolation.

But then I get back on form and remember I'm glad I'm not like those people and I genuinely feel sorry for them. Plus, I'm not living in a 3rd world swamp.

IAS, you're one of the good ones and like Suit said, make me think.

Yeah, too bad those commissions suck. The local Subaru dealer is $100/car plus the occasional spiff and Volvo is $200, $300 sometimes. The others fall somewhere in between and they all have shitty schedules that leave you no time to have a life and you're lucky if you can afford to get a demo car. The best is that most of them make you pay for the training before they actually tell you that you have the job.

I can relate in some ways. In some ways I really can't, but I've been reflecting on a lot of the same things, lately. I've had a hard shift in the last few months between being able to afford more or less the things I wanted to seeing if I can stretch the bottle of laundry detergent through to my next paycheck. I was at a conference a few weeks ago where I had peers grimacing over how to structure seven figure compensation plans to avoid tax penalties, who didn't blink at spending $900/DAY for a "Guided Experience" in bounds. It's hard to interact with that and pretend that's normal and then go home and worry about the gas bill. It's been a tough thing, ratcheting down my expectations and re-aligning needs and wants. Appreciating the things that are actually important, and ignoring the things that really aren't. It's hard - and not always successful.

My situation is temporary and self inflicted. It will get better. It's been very humbling, though, and sobering to realize that my low point is significantly better than status quo for most of my neighbors. They work hard, they aren't idiots, and there is literally almost zero chance that they're going to ever retire willingly or substantially improve their situation. For that to live alongside this thread really is fucked up. Thanks for pointing it out.
    focus.

You (mustonen) live here (Upper Michigan) so I think you can easily envision this moment:

I was president of my union local a couple years ago, above me in the union hierarchy is a council representative who is not part of our workplace and whose job is just handling union business, negotiating contracts and advising local officers and handling high level grievances and whatnot. We're talking, at a local monthly meeting, about low morale and low participation and attrition from the union now that we're right-to-work....I make the point that so much of the structure of these union functions and dollar amounts assumes a middle-class pay rate and good benefits as a starting point, but we don't have those, so asking our workers to pay a dues structure predicated on a living wage when they're making $11/hour and many are working 25 to 30 hour weeks of split shifts that take up the whole day.... is cruel and unusual and it's really hard for me, as the guy who's supposed to be getting people to join and pay, to hammer or nag at someone with a family when he says he literally has no extra money to pay union dues and I know it's not a lie.
Her response: you guys are doing great, there's a local downstate making $8/hr, there's a local across town making $9/hr. You should count your blessings to be starting at $11.

That was the end of my time being a union officer....and a pretty telling exchange if one's trying to make sense of all the "angry rural white people" stuff....you know, because that lady dresses well and has a house on the lake and drives a nice car. She does well, the management does well, everyone in the whole fucking system is doing great except the people doing the work.

$8 an hour, what is the point of the Union? They got a whole $.75 above minimum wage? Union dues probably wipe that out.

Bobby doesn't tell the part about sweeping the floor or that many of his customers are rich assholes (as opposed to poor assholes) who treat him like a day laborer.

Well, they did secure that 25-30 hour workweek.

The UP is a weird place, but not that much different from the rest of the rural midwest. Scrabbling for a low standard of living and blaming their hardships on illegals, or big government, or anything BUT corporate interests and the class system while they collect (i.e. their employer is subsidized by) bridge cards and tax credits. It CAN offer a pretty good qualify of life on $30k/year compared to many places, though.
