I'm under the impression that graupel is snow pellets. Little balls of rime. Hail is solid ice chunks

Well, I think both are formed by balls of ice/snow recirculating down then up into the atmosphere before falling out of the ski.

I think hail has had more recirculation cycles at warmer temps, making the balls more ice-like, while graupel flies around at higher elevations and comes out more like styrofoam bearings or chocolate chip shapes.

I don't know if that's a technical distinction but that is where I draw the line.

Graupel is basically snowflakes that had rime ice form on them as they fell through the atmosphere so they are softer and more snow like.

Hail involves the particles recirculating and gathering more ice and becoming denser.

I don't want to know. not enough wind to keep the masses away, but maybe they can open more of the mountain. I think most do the spring break thing in central oregon right. I'll be up though. Trying to get main lot with my dog Walter and a set of new/used boots to change out/into. If I run into you I'd like to explore some lower heather/gods. otherwise I'll be taking risks on the front side solo. The kids and wife told me to GTFO and ski

So what was that big traffic jam on Cascades Lakes Highway last evening all about? Got stuck for 20 minutes and then got to drive to Bend via the "Back to Bach, over to Sun River, and then on to Bend route.

Everyone had the same idea about hitting up the Summit chair. But pretty easy decision.
