Not really. He came in to let everyone know he was smarter than them and when no one agreed, he realized that he couldn't project his mind's echo chamber onto TGR as a wider audience. It also didn't work in his last election but people with long egos have to have short memories so I bet he's off to see if the real world will buy his brand again. As brit said, he will be back here again too to tell us why the real world is dumb for not having done so. Hell, he's reading right now.
The current rate for ped and cyclist fatalities, by car, in the US is 1.25 per 100 million miles driven. One incident doesn't establish a statistical record, but let's just say that this incident gives self-driving cars (and Uber in particular) a pretty bad head start on whatever statistical record they end up establishing.

Brain dead and made of money.
Homeless drug addict dies from walking into the path of robot car carrying transgender armed robber… welcome to the future, Earthlings.
It will hurt, probably more than it should. I'm all for people with sketchy stuff years in their past getting another chance. The real problem seems to be that Uber went bare minimum in terms of meeting their backup driver requirement, that they went with a low-caliber hire to fill what they probably considered a low-skill (and low-paying) job, regardless of whether the person is an ex-criminal.
Yeah - I suspect that Waymo is going to eat Uber's lunch at the end of this day... which will be fine by me since Uber, as a company, sucks donkey balls.
This is pretty much how I see things happening. How fast is hard to say, but even if the cars only get 10% better each year they will rapidly overtake the skill level of the average human driver.
The lack of brake response or evasive maneuvers by the car in light of the video is definitely not good. That said, it's virtually certain that a human driver would not be deemed at fault in this case. The average driver response time is 2.3 seconds (http://copradar.com/redlight/factors/IEA2000_ABS51.pdf) so a human driver very well may not have hit the brakes either. The NTSB report is going to an interesting read.
Agreed on all counts.
I agree with neu and Dan...
And remember, it's already here.
I'll watch the video in a bit, but, I also agree with the hiring practices.. you'd think that a company might put a premium on these backup drivers given how early in the process and testing this is.

My wife saw Musk speak at SXSW a week or so ago, he said that autonomous cars would be all over the place in 18 months. He did add, "I've been known to have trouble with deadlines though."
He also reiterated his position on AI, calling it "a bigger threat to humanity than nuclear weapons."
really bright people can be wrong
there is going to be a down sizing of the human population -- hopefully through declining birthrates
Yeah, well, grifters gotta grift. It certainly seems to be working for Mr. Iron Man. Ka-ching. And his companies are losing money, and, yeah, deadlines are a serious issue, it seems.
