    Moving to Sacramento

Well, its official. Moving to Sacarmento this fall. Looking to start out in Midtown / East Sac then eventually move to well east of the city (really like the Todd Valley area / start of Foresthill.) At least based on a few visits. What should I know about the area? Any mags in the area?

Moving for work. If so, what part of town is the job? What do you like to do, besides ski?

Best dive bar in East Sac is Cheaters on Folsom Blvd. Followed closely by the 2-Me and Club Raven. If you like that kind of thing.

Office is in Roseville. Will be going in 2 to 3 times a week. Skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, drinking.

Where to live is the biggest current question.

I like Fair Oaks for its rustic feel. Carmichael is OK, and you'd be going against the traffic. But is sounds like you might like living in Auburn or Folsom. Tyrone still lives in Folsom, I think. My only concern with living on the Divide is the fire danger. Fucking love the area, though.

I live in East Sac. Older neighborhoods, easy access to everything. Midtown similar. Inventory is low, prices are up. Houses are being bought right after listing. I hear rental market is tight too.

I guess it depends on what your life style requires. Does not sound like your Moving To Sacramento.

If your work is in Roseville, you would want to look anywhere East of Roseville to live. There are many communities in the Area. There are also places North and East of Roseville that are very rural. in the hills in the forest.

Midtown is certainly the most fun neighborhood for restaurants and bars and there are lots of small houses and condo developments going in. My son lives there and likes it a lot. East Sac is a pretty neighborhood--where we lived and where we still have a house; more expensive than midtown, quieter, older residents. Both are a tough commute to Roseville, at least by Sacramento standards. For an easier commute and easier access to the mountains I agree to stay in Roseville or east. The biggest decision you have to make is which season pass--Sugarbowl, Squalpine, or Northstar. Sugarbowl is closest, least crowded, some excellent steep terrain, but limited. Northstar is where fat people ski (and good trees on storm days.) Squaw is Squaw.
I assume you're planning to rent, at least to start with. I would definitely recommend it until you figure the place out on your own.
I liked living in Sacramento--not as crowded as the Bay Area, better for raising kids, more affordable, certainly a lot easier to get to the mountains, long pleasant spring and fall, summers hot of course, winters often wet and foggy. The nightlife has been steadily improving in the decades I've been there. We go down frequently to hear live music--Americana is what we like.
Drinking you can do anywhere IME.

What you NEED TO KNOW is that it is hot as fuck in summer, and shitty, foggy cold in winter, but there is respite from both just a short drive up the hills.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

    Get a Sugar Bowl pass.

Why Todd Valley? Because close to trails? Meadow Vista and Lake of the Pines to Alta Sierra are also cool, though commuting down 49 can suck a bit.

My folks live in Colfax. I have opinions. Should be moving out thataway myself as soon as I find a new job.

That is my fear and why we hope to move to the top of the gorges asap.

I want a view of the gorge. Not 100% there but, looking for a couple acres and a view if possible. Not dead set on Todd Valley.

I love Cool- been spending time there for thirty years. Is the Georgetown Divide is too far of a drive? Other than the logging trucks, it isn't such a bad commute.

you have to get pretty far up in the mountains before it gets any cooler in the summer. Sacramento often gets cooled by ocean breezes coming through the Golden Gate and Delta in the evenings. Those breezes don't make it up the hill. If you do wind up in the foothills you can at least get above the fog. During winter dry spells daytime highs in Sacto can be lower than in the Sierra--we get some strong inversions.

No longer burning rice fields, so we got that going'.

And the winter fog thing seems to a thing of the past too - could come back, I suppose - unpredictable climate changes and all.

Still flat and REALLY dirty in the Fall when the delta breeze stops and they're cultivating the fields for the winter crops.

Ditto on fog, really not much of an issue. Hot...sometimes, but usually get a break after 2 or three days from Delta breeze, not like the north or south ends of the valley.

I've also noticed that about the fog--that it seemed to be worse in the past. I wonder if it has anything to do with not burning rice stubble, cleaner stoves and inserts and furnaces, etc. The notorious London fogs of the 19th Century turned out to be mostly smoke rather than water. Still get some nasty fogs from time to time, more often low clouds on the valley floor with a band of fog as you go up the hill through the cloud layer. Anyone moving to Sac from SLC should feel right at home.

Really, hmm I was told Foresthill's high was typically 6 to 10 degrees cooler than Sacramento?
