My alloys cost what the steels did, and for 2 cars steel wheels essentially didn’t exist.

Three days sitting won’t start. I’ve been getting convenience disabled notices for a few weeks so no surprise. Car has two batteries. Probably change both but likely it’s the main battery.

Mercedes has +- terminals for charge/jump separate from the battery.

Anyone with a V70r ditch the ride control system for a cup lit or coil overs? About to pull the trigger on a 2005, 6speed with an impeccable maintenance history and 100k miles.... just curious if you can lower sensor replacement costs with an appropriate sport suspension.

Mercedes has +- terminals for charge/jump separate from the battery.

BMW has the same remote terminals so you don’t have to access the battery, which is buried in the back of the car for balance reasons.

It took me years to realize this on my first Bimmer and many maddening instances of digging into the trunk to try and jam jumper cables into a battery compartment made by Bavarian elves.

I’ve had no issues with alloys for winter abuse. Drop diameter by an inch for more sidewall, find something on sale that isn’t gravity cast, done. And yeah Tahoe gets some gnarly potholes in a big winter.

Checking in: While practical enough when I had a mini van to fall back on, now that I'm working with a single vehicle with 3 kids and 2 dogs, the sedan is no longer getting it done.

Looking for decent mileage (>25mpg on the highway, >=30 would be preferred), reliable (single vehicle), AWD. I really like the idea of a little diesel Colorado, but that's way outside my budget, so a wagon it is... I prefer to be lower to the ground anyways. This is all still speculative, but budget has to be sub $20K, and for it to be anything but speculative in the next few months, it really should be less than $15k. Subaru is the default answer, and those are easy enough to find around here. What else? Is a 2012 A4 Avant going to sit in the shop all the time? The XC70 doesn't seem to hit my mileage mark...

I'm not afraid to do my own wrenching/maintenance.... but it isn't something I particularly enjoy and I'm not looking to tinker with it for fun like some of you yahoos. It's a tool that needs to work and I'd prefer it if it was comfortable and reasonably fast.

I always thought the Ford flex was a cool looking wagon/van. They do have a 4wd option. Lots of space and looks pretty practical. Also not a minivan.

With 3 kids? Another minivan.

My friend showed me the third row seats in his Nissan Rogue the other day. Those can be had for cheap and are pretty reliable. Gas mileage ought to be okay.

I have 3 kids and a 90lb dog. We have an older fwd Sienna, dying 2000 legacy wagon, and (new for us) 99 land cruiser. I went through a similar-ish search in 2015, which resulted in buying the cruiser. The family and dog can squeeze into the subi (2 kids are still in booster seats), but everybody is most comfortable in the minivan.

I can't remember which, but either the rav4 or crv (maybe version-dependent) has a really uncomfortable center seat. The newer version of the outback is much larger interior then previous versions. New version of Honda pilot is pretty high mpg for what it is.

The Toyota Venza might work. The 2.7 4cyl AWD will be ok on gas. The V6 is probably a bit thirsty but should be able to meet your 25 mpg criteria on the highway.

An older Highlander Hybrid would also be a good call.

I want better mileage. I don’t need all the cabin room, I just need a place for the dogs and some shit. If I’m going to get 20mpg I may as well buy a truck. If it wasn’t for the dogs, my sedan (Buick Lacrosse) would be fine, even with two in booster seats. I need a place for the fur kids, and putting them in the front seat (both ~50lbs) isn’t ideal.

And I like the Subaru over the CR-V/RAV4/Rogue alternatives.

Do you need AWD and handy at fixing minor issues ? You can get a Saab 9-5 or Volvo wagon for much less than a Subaru.
