Ugh.... last night was a nightmare! First the kittens escaped from their room and ran into the bathroom where I have a Clivia plant. Caught one of them chewing on the brown tip of a leaf and freaked out not knowing if it was safe. Quick online search reveals it is most definitely not safe. Highly poisonous! Debate in my head if he really ate it or just bit and spit (there were bits of dried brown plant on the floor). Treatment is horrible - induce vomiting, stomach wash, fluids, no other way to treat as there is no cure. Gut told me he didn't really eat it so no late night weekend emergency vet call (no reason to call if I'm not going to have the treatment and I wasn't sure).

Got through that ordeal kinda, though it was still in the back of my mind (gave me nightmares all night). Then when I went up to check on them again Milo was three legged holding his right front paw in the air and refusing to put weight on it. I manipulated the entire paw pressing the pad and exposing the claws then went up the leg to the shoulder without so much as a complaint from him. Leg didn't feel obviously broken but he was def. unhappy about it. The paw was totally limp. This morning he's spunky, eating and pooping but still doesn't want to stand on it though I saw him use it when wrestling with one of his brothers. I think maybe he sprained it? Got a claw caught on the cat tree and fell twisting his wrist as he went? Again... not going for the emergency vet call. We don't have an open emergency clinic here - you have to pay to have the vet come open and bring a tech with them. It's not cheap. I've used it before but at that time my cat had a temp of 104 so it was warranted.

Anyhoo... enough of the drama. Got some pics this morning before heading out to feed the horses (yeah, I've got some real dirty barn clothes):

Look how good Marty's eyes look! He's the one staring at the camera. The were so bad when I got him. Unfortuately he's given his squishy eye to his sister now.

You go grrl. Funny how they always get into these kinds of shenanigans on a weekend when the vet visit rates skyrocket.

Talked to me vet. She thinks either he got bit or has a soft tissue injury. Said to bring him in first thing in the morning.

These twin brother/sister died earlier this year, about 2 months apart...Damn hard time. Not sure but after hours and hours of research I think it was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy maybe combined with aortic thromboembolism. $2k and the vet still had no clue nor ideas to help.

Great pics! We live in a rural part of the county and ↑↑↑ bobcats are here- but fox, coyote & wolf are more common. Should I worry about s racoon killing a cat?

Does anyone know about GPS cat collars?

Our new feline is really cool and she's become a real member of the family. However she's prone to prowl at night and doesn't want to come in. It was 18F last night and she spent the whole night out & rolls up at 8AM like nothing's wrong.

I'd love to know where she travels & what her range is.

She's a great mouser. Before we had mice everywhere, now we just have quarter carcasses everywhere. Most of the time, she eats the whole thing.

Our cats never had a problem with raccoons, I think they actually got along.

I used to have a cat who would sit on the porch and wait for the raccoons to come by and see what fell out of the bird feeders, When they left he would follow them. When I brought a kitten home, they both followed them. in over 15 years we never had a problem,

Main problem with raccoons is they can often have rabies.

In my area they are the primary carriers of the same.

no rabies here, but there was a Distemper outbreak about 20 years ago, wiped out most of the raccoons and quite a few cats.

Lost one of mine to some unexplained death too - found her dead in the hay loft. Only 5 years old. My friend's cat died mysteriously too.

Had another cat that developed a "fever of unknown origin". He got over it but they don't understand why it happens. Had to spend close to a week at fancy animal hospital in Kirkland - place has animal life flight!

Not a good idea to put collars on outdoor cats unless they are break-away. You don't want them to get snagged on something and get stuck or choked.

Oh no! Thinking good thoughts! My neighbor's cat was out all day and at 8pm hadn't come in (she generally only went out to "use the facilities" during the day but she showed up a little after 9pm covered in straw. Must have been in a stack somewhere. hope Mr. Kitty was just enjoying the full moon and is sleeping it off somewhere.

Bratwurst loved to get upon the roof (my house is built into the hillside so the back side of the house is ground level like the front making a portion of the first floor roof only a foot off the ground). My roof is metal and when it would frost in the morning he could get up there but when he went over the ridge cap to the front side (to get under my bedroom window and meow ) he couldn't get back up and over the way he came because it was too slick. Many a time I would be out at o'dark thirty in my pajamas plucking him off the roof. It got so frequent that in the Fall when the weather started to get cold I just left the ladder out. Miss that boy so much.

So sorry for your kitty loss - sucks so bad. Monster looks like one tough guy but those toms can be real gentle giants once they get fixed and calm down. My vet says it's because they never act out of fear like males that are neutered at a young age.

I think it's funny that there's a Marty in this thread, Monster got his name because he never meowed, Just grunted like Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein, So I called him The Monster.
He spent the night 60' in a tree, he came down in a drybag

Thanks, he was a good cat, we let him stay in the garage one winter and by the summer he was ready to move in and take over. Cedar wasn't too thrilled at first, But as long as he had a little cream cheese every morning he was happy.

This is Lucy, I don't think she's ever made an appearance here yet, She's about 17 and showed up about a year before Monster in 2006, we figured she wandered from a house up the road and liked the food and figured she'd stay. Her back legs don't work too well but she has no problems getting around or jumping up on the couch (but she'd rather be picked up). She likes to talk and has quite a large vocabulary, Her best trick is letting you know after she's used the litter box, She will howl "hello" (not her regular greeting hello) until you ask her if she used the litter box, If you don't she'll continue getting louder and louder until you do. She just used the litter box by the way.

Thats funny your kitty tells you she used the box. Mine will be outside all day but when they come in they go straight to the box.

Frankie will wait till I come home to do business. I think he is showing me how good he is.

I just don't want her to get eaten. What a great creature! She comes when we call her & follows us around the ranch as we work.

Really, I've hated all the cats I've ever met until a few years ago, when in the basement of the Hostelˣ, where my boot shop is- we got to know Lionel Ritchie- definitely the coolest cat anywhere. A great ambassador for catdom. In retrospect, I realize now that it wasn't cats I disliked, it was cat women. At varying times of my life I've known their leadership.

We see coyote, fox & bear all the time. She likes being out. She really likes killing stuff. We had an incredible bonding moment while we tag hunted a grass snake. We have a miniature puma living in the cabin. Again, as our first pet we're very excited to watch her. Her coat makes perfect camo.

No collar for sure, but the GPS trackers seem appealing to me, even if just for a few days- I want to see where's she's going & when she spends the night out. Here is the kitty portal to the woodshed where a bed and food are. She eats the food, but I don't think she sleeps in there.

    Kitty Stoke

Is there anything preventing another animal or predator from getting in the shed? I used a chip enabled cat door and it works well to keep skunks out.
