Listen to the audio, the cyclic rate is in the 400 range, half the speed of a full auto, and very uneven. The gun forum speculation was that it was a crank, slidefire, or bump long before the official statement. I'm sure there's plenty-o-youtube vids you can watch...

why wouldnt there be a belt fed auto for something like this... seems like the only way to go

I can't speculate why he didn't get an illegal FA or a legal class III FA, but I can tell you that it's pretty easy to hear the high variability in the cyclic rate inherent to pseudo-FA addons. Maybe he figured their wild inaccuracy was acceptable since his target area was several football fields in size.
You can also plainly hear a cyclic rate averaging about 400, too slow for any semi-modern small caliber machine gun (typically 600-1200).
Youtube some M16 or AK47 full auto videos and listen to them. I think you'll hear the difference easily. Then check slide fire or bump stock videos.
