Totally disagree with you on that. No reason whatsoever for the other car to not move over so you can at least ride the dbl yellow or cross it a bit.

How about cyclists and pedestrians in the bike lane on the other side of the road? Would that be a good enough reason? Or do you expect the oncoming cars to hit the brakes so you can cross the double yellow? Slow down. There's enough room for everybody.

One of the major principles of traffic calming is to narrow the road. When they added bike lanes to Donner Pass Rd they also narrowed the car lanes. That slowed traffic way down--people still speed but not as bad as they did. This spring there were no bike lanes striped and cars were routinely doing 50+ (limit is 35). With the lanes back in it's better, but obviously people want to speed and don't feel they can control their car well enough to pass a bike without driving on the wrong side of the road. (It doesn't help that some cyclists--the one's who look like they're serious--make a practice of riding the lane on the traffic side of the bike lane--for no good reason as the lane is kept swept quite well.

Not a bike story but---guy blows past me crossing a double yellow on a curve leaving the Alpine Meadows parking lot, hits the ice we both knew was coming, skids across the oncoming lane between two cars just missing both, and winds up nose down in a ditch. He looked ok so I kept going. That was wrong. I should have stopped and gone over to him and laughed in his face. Which is what the cyclist should have done.

Same here, The local Chamber of Commerce thought what we needed here was more tourists so they've been pushing this place as a great place to ride a bike, Unfortunately the roads are narrow and not designed for bikes and cars much less trucks. They seem to forget the rules of the road or physics (larger object wins in a collision) and ride like they are the only ones on the road, Pulling out in front of oncoming cars and stopping on a blind corner with their kid in a trailer half in the road.

Back in Harvard Square where I grew up, they have apparently taken Brattle St, which was two lanes of one way traffic and two parking zones, and made it into a single lane of vehicular traffic squeezed between two parking zones (one is now in the middle of the road), and a wide two-way bike route to the other side of the middle lane of parked cars. It's causing big vehicular traffic back ups through the Square because anytime someone parallel parks, it holds up everyone. Plus bikers apparently don't always stick to the designated lanes. That's some great planning [emoji849] 🤣

Yeah as I think about it more I don't know that I would have stopped for more than a moment either but I do think he should have at least waited to see what the outcome was. I certainly wouldn't have stopped long enough for the guy to see me and feel the need to take his stupidity out on me. As it was he did ask if anybody had the riders info or at least a dashcam vid he could use to nail the guy in court.

Well then Spook, they shouldn't be driving a car because you're to be aware of everything around you while driving a car. Especially pedestrians and cyclists.

Often when you pass a cyclist a car will show up out of nowhere or the window is smaller than expected...whatever the case may be. Not everyone lives in the middle of nowhere without traffic, so passing cyclists happens with oncoming traffic all the time.

If they don't move over a little if they have room to when an oncoming car is passing a cyclist then they drive like a selfish asshole. If you disagree with me, that's fine. I just think you drive like an asshole is all. Not the you are an asshole, you just drive like one.

I guarantee you that when you cross the double yellow to pass a cyclist you are not first checking to make sure it's safe for oncoming traffic to get out of the way. Your attention is where it should be--on the cyclist watching for unexpected swerves, avoiding potholes, etc. If you think you can be aware of everything that is happening on a busy road in the few seconds it takes to decide to cross the centerline, you are badly mistaken. We're talking about a crowded road with cars pulling out without warning, large trucks hauling larger boats, pedestrians on the wrong side of the road 3 abreast, people stepping into traffic without looking, dogs off leashes, 4 year old kids on bicycles, people doing U turns without warning. I've got enough potential hazards to worry about without worrying about you crossing the center line. That's if I'm not texting or playing with my radio or looking for the joint I just dropped on the floor.

Also--if someone pulls out of a side street on the opposite side of the road drive in the opposite lane they will be looking to their left to see when it's safe to pull out and won't see you in their lane on their right. If you feel you must cross the center line to pass a cyclist wait until there is no oncoming traffic. You "expect" me to pull out of your way when you cross the center line. I expect you to stay on your side of the road when you're coming at me. Which of us has the more reasonable expectation?

Let's try this a different way. This is the driver's test at your state DMV. You must answer this question correctly to get a license.
1) You are driving down a narrow 2 lane road with bike lanes and a double yellow center line. You feel it is unsafe to pass a cyclist at the speed you are traveling. You should A) slow down to pass them at a safe speed, B) partially cross the center line and hope the oncoming traffic moves over for you C) wait until there is no oncoming traffic and a clear sight line to partially cross the center line, D) A or C, E) who the fuck are you to tell me how to drive?

And I didn't read that link, tl, but my good friend is a fighter pilot and he was never a good driver. Even his mom asked him how the hell was he going to fly when he couldn't even drive a motorcycle after he laid it down way back. Ah, he's gone almost 30 yrs without crashing a plane or a heli and he's now done with his last change of command.
