    Liability Only Car Insurance?

I have a 20yo GX with a lot of miles and a rebuilt title. It’s a third/backup vehicle. It’s not worth anything on paper.

…As you all have seen, cost of insurance has like 2Xed over the last 5 years…

It doesn’t make sense for me to for pay full boat insurance on this thing.

I’ve been pretty religious to Starefarm. All the vehicles, home, umbrella bundleage. The few times I’ve had to execute; they have been fantastic to deal with.

But it’s been like pulling teeth to get them to write me a cheaper policy for this car. Deductibles are maxed, collision and assistance removed, etc… still only marginally cheaper than full boat.

Does anyone have recommendations for better value liability only insurance? Not so called “cut-rate” insurance in name only BS. Something that actually has the protection needed but no bells and whistles….

Maybe try a local agent? They shop rates and coverage and give you options for carriers that will meet your needs. Probably depends on a lot of factors but our agent has been cheaper than direct.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

I added liability only with low coverage limits thru state farm for a bike I bought recently and it was as easy as a quick email to my agent's office. My annual premium was only like $90 (though I eventually decided to step up to higher limits and more coverage cuz it was still so cheap). Your agent shouldn't be giving you any trouble about writing you a cheap policy. That's absurd. It's your choice how you insure your shit, not theirs. They just write the policy you request.

I just added a second vehicle. $30 a month includes emergency road service which is only $12.65 for 6 months. State Farm

Do you have low mileage coverage? If you don't drive it much that can lower the rate more. Obviously the reason the liability only coverage isn't that much cheaper is that liability is the big risk. As far as the other stuff they know the max you can cost them is the value of the vehicle which is minimal. For the liability the sky is the limit, and your coverage limit must be high enough to allow the umbrella policy. If you go to another company for the liability on this vehicle your umbrella won't cover you for it.

We just did this. 10 year old Tesla. Yeah it stickered at one point for $110 (wayyy before I got hold of it), but also the bumper is falling off and it has more miles than (insert your mother joke of choice). Cash value 15K -maybe-. Canceled collision coverage, kept comprehensive (my rationale was that I can mitigate risk by not driving like an idiot and using a dash cam, but deer and shitheads still happen). Saved about $1k/yr. Took a small pile of cash and buried it in the yard (HYSA) just in case we have to go out and put something down on a replacement. Savings get rolled into that account.

I might have to revisit this - thanks for the reminder - when I asked to lower the mileage they sold me on the GPS tracker which in theory would reduce my rate for the lower mileage…. But it’s not really…

I've been in insurance claims for 30 years and get asked which company is the best all the time. The best company is the one your local independent agent (you know, the one down on Main St) gets a good quote from. Having an agent is advertised as this worthless middleman these days but if the shit hits the fan, it sure is nice to be able to walk in the front door and tell them the issue and ensure that they resolve it with your carrier before you leave. Try that with 1-800-INSURANCE or some other online carrier.

Peruvian-at what delta would you advise just paying for repair out of pocket vs filing a claim? Is it worth it for potential premium increase to file 1500 repair w a 500 deductible for a self inflicted would in a parking lot barrier?
