I run a blinky red LED in the rear and a blinky white twin LED in the front.....during the day. Drivers definitely see you more easily.

    This is bad somehow?

If all youz would just stay on dirt, the problem would resolve itself.

Notice the sound of crunching carbon fiber in that video. Modern times.

How far is it between points at which it is safe to pull over, remembering that there is no shoulder on the roads you mentioned?

I was questioning how much of a difference it could make if "all" cyclists followed the law you mentioned. Because it seems like a pretty tiny fraction that isn't doing so already.

This reminds me of a more common prejudice: I used to hear people a little older than most in this thread say they would stop using prejudicial thinking against black people if all of them would stop selling drugs. I'll admit it would be convenient to apply broader thinking in a lot of cases. For instance, if those 3% of Porsche owners that know how to drive them would sell theirs we'd always be able to spot the moneyed hacks who will be ass first into a ditch if they ever get above 7/10ths. But alas, just as a few African-Americans will inevitably choose to make a living (and the odd cyclist will choose to ride) in an illegal way, the polyester Porsche jacket cannot quite be used as a fool-proof marker of hackery. It's an imperfect world, to be sure.

Did a little roadie with Mrs. 54 today. Rode single file, stopped and waved, signaled, etc. no incidents. Life is good.

Though this was funny - about 1/2 dozen motorists over the course of an hour gunned past us on residential streets only to come to a stop sign just 20-30 yards further up the street. Not a biggie; just seems indicative of the impatience of some drivers.

The Arctic Bike Club sponsors a race down the Seward Highway from Anchorage to Seward Aug 31.

At least they do it after touron season is mostly over, but they'll be holding time trials through August.

I've said it before but popular cycling routes that are windy roads with no shoulders should have parabolic mirrors on the curves so cars can pass safely by crossing the double yellow. Dare I suggest that local cycling clubs and retailers voluntarily foot the bill? (Maybe I'm just jealous because I couldn't make it up Donner Pass if I tried, and if I did try I'd be riding the brakes the whole way down. And BTW that road is in pretty bad shape after last winters storms but it doesn't seem to be slowing people down on the descent. Guy got killed a few years ago after he hit a pothole.)

That hit and run story reminds me of the mugging turned murder in lower manhattan several years ago. Guy and girl get held up outside a club around 3am... Rather than give up her purse, the chick asks indignantly "What are you going to do? Shoot me?" So the dude shot her... No one would condone shooting people to rob them, but at the same time, walking (or biking) around with the expectation that other people will show greater concern for your safety than you are is just waiting to draw the winning lottery ticket. There are plenty of people who are perfectly happy to shoot someone, run someone over, whatever... Why go looking to see if you can find one of them?

Well said. (In HS in Detroit my brother knew a guy who lifted weights, liked to fight, and fancied himself a tough guy. One day, in the locker room after PE he told everyone that anyone who could take his watch could have it. Skinny little kid pulled a gun and took it. (Does this story have anything to do with your post? Probably not.))

Well, that makes the case for riding in traffic so complete fucking idiots in cars know where you are going. Then someone else can hit you from behind because they are pissed you are taking up the roadway.

Jesus. They'll probably charge him with a misdemeanor and give him probation.

If you look at the second half of the video it looks like there's a bike lane that becomes a joint bike lane/right turn lane at intersections--a common set up around here. The cyclist was where he was supposed to be--on the left side of the right turn lane. And had he actually turned right he would still have been hit. It's a pretty easy mistake to make as a driver--you want to make a left and you focus on the oncoming cars to decide when it's safe to turn. Your focus on the cars causes you to ignore the cyclist. It is strange that the car waited so long after the last oncoming car to turn. Cell phone?

What in the hell were those guys doing? I almost understand that the lane ends up ahead, so they are out there in anticipation, but I sure as hell wouldn't be out there.

The cyclist did not look for the lane change. How would a car driver be judged in that scenario?

well, the truck illegally merged from an exit lane. looks weird but looks like a new lane opens up right after exit and biker signaled to go over to new lane.

Yup. I am just way too chicken to be out in between lanes like that, and this was a graphic demonstration of why.

This is why bicycles aren't allowed on Interstates (at least 'round here.)

Somehow, relative speed differential doesn't seem to come up often in these discussions. It seems so obvious to me. The autobahn is relatively safe because everyone is going fast, but relatively close in speed to each other. I bike going 25 MPH on that road doesn't make sense to me.
