Fucking grocery shoppers. I was going down the left side of the frozen food section so I could quickly pass and get to produce, and this elderly lady stood there blocking the aisle for seemingly 10-15 seconds trying to pick out which hash browns she wanted.

No, not really, but some of you are so angry that you sound fucking ridiculous.

Pick out your hash browns and GTFO. You'd prolly bitch about female models riding around on fixies without helmets because it's a safety issue.

I made a cyclists' year yesterday.

I had my very first mtb in storage for years, a 1995 GT Avalanche AL - great bike. But it's been nearly a decade since I rode it. So I put it up on CL.

I get a call from a guy who was so stoked to find it. Turns out it was his first mtb too and he's been on the hunt for years and years trying to find another - much less a completely original example like mine in great condition.

He even got his from the very same bike shop mine came from (still had the shop sticker on the frame).

Dude was so jacked up to get it, like a gigantic nostalgia bomb hit him.

Anyway, I made a cyclist's day and it felt pretty good.
I still call it The Jake.

See, and that's why no one likes cyclists.

Wait ..... they threw the book at the cyclist for riding two-abreast instead of single file?!?!? This is an outrage!

This is the thing, isn't it? I wouldn't do what that cyclist did, but nobody should use violence like that to express their displeasure. Dude in the SUV was an educator too! W. T. F.

I simply cannot understand this. From newspaper commentary to roadbike review and other sites, everyone seems to point out this two abreast business. I ride a whole bunch and hardly ever two abreast, but...

How on earth does anyone come to the conclusion that what "A" was doing was deserved of what "B" did?

I don't care if the guy was riding his bike in the middle of the road, with his middle finger extended, and yelling "FUCK YOU!!!" at the top of his lungs...how can anyone be of the mindset that it's ok to strike a human being with a multi-ton vehicle? Especially when the obvious response is to turn the wheel slightly left and press on the right pedal until past obstruction.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

It wasn't deserved, but on the other hand, and I am sorry to say, it's not surprising.

Obviously. But . . . . what pisses me off about cyclists who refuse to share the road is that they incite the cretins to hate all cyclists and make the road a lot more dangerous for the rest of us who cycle. I don't know what the law is in Tennessee but I would like to see the cyclist get cited for a traffic violation and the driver go to prison.

(I'm guessing the driver didn't intend to hit the cyclist--probably meant to cut in closely to scare him or make him swerve and misjudged the speed and distance. You see that all the time on the freeway --some pissed off driver swerving at the person they're pissed off at or passing them and then cutting in front closely--with or without slamming on the brakes at the same time. Usually no harm done but evry once in a while someone misjudges or loses control.)

    This.

AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH. This is also why I tend to go out of my way to wave and say thanks etc. when a car lets me go by (or whatever). I have to make up for the dumbfucks.

It doesn't matter how polite you are. Motorists will still hate cyclists. Go ahead and be polite but don't fool yourself that it makes a difference.

To motorists, the only thing worse than being a roadie would be to wear a hijab while riding.

    Not true.

On a single file group, I'll do what it takes to give them 4+ feet.

    Ride abreast and I won't.

I'm tightening up on my reciprocity.

Yes, I ride. old goat and plugboots are right.

The group that rides single file is showing some concern for other road users. So I try to reciprocate.

Those that ride abreast aren't. So I don't.

In no way am I advocating the Tennessee situation above.

if you're going to cross a yellow to pass, does it really matter?

It's funny, I've been moderately effected by this thread as well. I used to stay closer to the shoulder to let cars pass without using the oncoming lane, but since reading here I'm more convinced that this makes me less safe and is thus an asshole move. Not that the texting driver necessarily deserves the extra notice that comes with my being more visible, but he's my fellow human and I'd feel bad making him responsible for my death or injury if there's something I can do to prevent it. So now if my wife and I are on our way to a trailhead and there's a car coming up from behind I make sure to edge left a bit until I can see that it's definitely safe to pass, then fall back into single file once the car has moved over into the oncoming lane at a safe location. Thanks TGR!

Yes, at least to me riding single file shows concern for other users. Riding abreast doesn't.

Again, and for the zillionth time, I live in a relatively rural area where legions of spandex clad mamils chose to cycle.

When they ride abreast, it make passing more risky, but it really signals a complete lack of awareness about other users, like motorists.

It also, as og and pb point out, causes many motorists to think all cyclists are assholes, reducing the motorist mindset to:

It doesn't matter how polite you are. Cyclists will still hate motorists. Go ahead and be polite but don't fool yourself that it makes a difference.
