Mount Rose excellent today with free buddy passes. Ice in the northern shade
Tempted to make a trip up to Rose, north side lines are definitely where its at right now, hit two northish facing chutes yesterday, Tad early on the first one at noon, prime on the second at 1pm. Total stoner move I left my pack on top of the second run so I had to go back with a recruit today, Mr. NoKees for a retrieval.
Skiing down with two loaded packs on my back was not the most fun, almost sent one down on its own. With the warmer temps today, we decided skiing both was not gonna happen, dropped the main line at 11:30 which was prolly a tad on the early side but was still really good.

Retrieval mission today

Yes it is a shame...but I've got to say that given the coverage this year, Rose is no slouch when it comes to spring skiing options. The Chutes have been on the money this week. But hey, for everyone's sake, please remember that there is a pool at Squaw and a Starbucks in the village. If you're really lucky, you might see important people!

BUT JONNY MOSELEY IS SKIING TODAY!!!! ARE YOU NOT STOKED!?? WATCH HIM AND OTHER SHREDDERS SKI SILVERADO* THIS WINTER DURING OUR RECORD** SNOW YEAR!
* Closed to the public until 6 weeks later.
** most snow since 2011 so we're calling it a record anyway. Fuck yeah! This shit is dynamic bitch!
Remote Data on top of Slide Mt (Mt Rose ski) indicated low Friday night was 42. Was at Slide at 830 thinking it would be too soft by 11. Skied until 230. Snow was perfect butter at 0830. Never got to soft. Stickyness on Rose side yyes. I don't ski that side anyway. They did close the big boy gates around 1? Heard there was an injury. They never reopened those chutes. Bee Hive and Hornets Nest were money until 230. Easily stayed good until thier 330 closing.
Only reason I left was I was beat. I was not expecting to ski 6 hours today.
Ottime
You need more time at Rose and Alpine in the Spring for some comparison.
The mothership delivered so hard today. What a fun scene mobbing that terrain into the evening. Every skier seemed to share the same drive to just rip the shit out of that primo-corn with some extra flair thrown in for the suspended audience. That stuff, that makes a place special. Those weekends in Jan where everything went wrong are all forgiven. So satisfied.
Good vibe at Squaw today
Reminded me of a Mammoth last day.
Opposite of Vail style, with full on shenanigans.
A mostly full parking lot.
After 4, KT was mobbed. Band playing on the deck too
By almost-7, there was a big crowd up top
Patrol seemed cool with everything, but think they might have put the kibosh on snowballs, and the chinese-downhill in GS bowl.
Light had gone dim over there by then anyway.
Shoulda had it on west face.

Dude, my legs were worked by the end of today. I hadn't planned on skiing until closing on Friday or taking 18 runs in the chutes. I thought it would be paste by noon on Saturday, but the snow held up better than my legs did. Two day total was 38 runs in the Chutes. Rose delivered some epic spring skiing the last two days.
Most laps I was entering thru the Yellow Jacket gate and skiing the Fuse, Charge, Detonator and Dragon Lady chutes. There is so much snow still that there is kind of a spine in between Yellow Jacket and Charge that was super fun to smear your way down. Then on my next lap that gate as well as the upper gates were closed with no notice. I asked around and heard that with the warming temps they were worried about an afternoon wet slide incident. Sounded resonable. Lower chutes aren't as steep and have a slightly different aspect and they stayed open. May try to rally for a few runs tomorrow.
I was not making a comparison. I've never been to Rose in spring. I still would imagine I would stand by my statement about Summit 6 being the single best lift for spring skiing. With Rose, you need two lifts for the chutes (correct me if I'm wrong) so you are not in the "single" lift category.
OTOH, I'm trying to talk my son into Rose for this coming Saturday. But y'all don't have a tram, some there is that issue. I can see how Rose would be fun in spring with the different aspects readily available.
this right here, in regards to the new, updated spring window.
i hit up the local quick spot, Sunrise Bowl, yesterday at 8:30. Made my first run at 9 and it was already cooked. Granted, this is a pretty pure east facing slope, plus it's rather low in elevation (somewhere around 7500). Interesting in that all the snow in the shade of the trees was still frozen, but everything in the sun was baked. Still a ton of snow up there, but based on the coming week's forecast, the new window for this spot is probably 6am - 8am, then perhaps late evening, say 6pm-8pm.
Heard reports from Vets that Donner Ski Ranch was fun, but again got gloppy pretty early (he skied from opening to about noon). Heard the same in regards to conditions about Squaw (from Corky and Unpossible) and Gone2Alpine already posted about how Rose held up.
Based on those reports and the continued updates from folks hitting higher elevation spots on the South Shore, again, it's looking like the optimal windows are early morning, definitely pre-noonish.
That said, Rose closing parking lot bash Monday the 29th should be stellar.
On a PS note, for those in the North Lake area, I drove out to scope Jackson Meadows/Mt Lola last week and the paved road ends about 6 miles in, whereupon it's covered in about 4+ feet of snow. Didn't have time to scope out the Independence Lake road, but the second entrance to Perazzo Meadows was still covered in about 4+ feet of snow, so have to imagine that a good portion of the previous road is the same. Definitely sled action for the moment.
Rose seems like a pretty cool place. They could easily charge $10 per ticket with the buddy pass, but they just offer it free. Seems like they understand how to keep skiing fun.
Does that mean I need to come with a person who has a rose season pass or I can just show up with my heave pass to get the freebie?
FYI red lake peak is still freezing overnight and skiing great with very little dirt hiking.
Surprisingly Squaw skied very good today. Skied 9 - 2. Every bit as good as Rose has been the past few days. Worth using an MC ticket for sure, especially if KT runs next weekend. Rumor is the Mtn. Manager wants to spin it next weekend. Plenty of snow on the runs, will just need some help to get to the chair.
Again no freeze last night but surprisingly excellent sking.KT was good at 2Pm.
Lift served May sking at Tahoe has exceeded all expectations for me.
Were you the guy with the 2 dogs?
Gotta 2nd that Rose is good Spring skiing. Haven't been this year but had some great May days there last year & they are the type of area I want to support.
Anyone know if Squaw is planning to keep KT open weekdays this week?
I think I've skied 8 Squaw days since the end of April, which is likely the most I've been there in one season. Every day has been great!
