I too, am somewhat skeptical of the timeline.

However, the pressure from both ends of the spectrum (Baby Boomers unable to drive and Millenials that don't want to drive) may push this fast enough to hit that timeline.

I hope to hell it does. Better batteries would help immensely.

How would that on demand system work for people like us, who need to go to trailheads and backcountry destinations? Those cars won't pull my camper either.

In ten years the small sat Internet launches will be complete so tap your smart phone 1 hour from the parking lot to summon the auto driving hauler unit that can pull your camper. (it also pulls freight trailers and you could rent it to sit idle at the th)

It is amazing to think about how freeing cheap auto driving cars will be for the elderly.

How sweet will it be to have vehicles that can be basically sleeper-cars - load up the gear, hop in, sleep, arrive rested at your destination the next morning... ready to hit the slopes.

I appreciate the enthusiasm for a future utopia, but you people, especially Summit, are dilution all. Vehicle ownership and the freedom it derives is one of the greatest advances in societal evolution. Instant mobility is the cornerstone of our country. That will disappear when you give up your car for a robot Uber

You can have your own robot car... nobody is outlawing personal car ownership.

Yay. I'm free to sit in traffic. What a win that is.

Driving is a waste of time and private auto ownership is an almost unfathomable waste of $$.

    That's all going to change.

Autodriving cars will reduce the need for road expansion because of efficiency.

They will also devalue mountain houses. Live in Castle Rock? or Western Kansas? Drag yourself to the car, sleep all the way to Vail) and allow workers to live far from resorts with less hassle. Crowds will worsen especially at more distance areas like CB, Aspen, Steamboat, Beaver Creek. Clearly Breckenridge will have to expand all the way to Peak 1

You are really glorifying sitting in traffic on the interstate! I would assume that you'd still be able to flip the car into manual mode for driving off the grid. But I'm willing to give up the gas-brake-gas-brake hassle of sitting in traffic any time. Imagine, no more getting stuck behind left-lane-losers, no more road raging, no more stressful driving in a blizzard, etc. I think it would reduce everyone's stress and probably improve everyone's health.

I love the idea of setting the car to a destination, throwing in the skis and crawling into the back and waking up in Jackson for first chair. Just make sure it is Jackson, WY and not Jackson, MS

Rezoning will have to occur in Breck and Frisco: when's the first skyscraper? 2023?

Skyscrapers unnecessary. Robocars will drive in the workers from Kremmling and Leadville so employee housing can be converted to more condos.

    Excellent!
The robocars will have to tie into the future Loveland-ABasin-Breck-Copper-Vail gondy of course.

4x4 vehicles will probably still be desirable... autodrive cars aren't going to take you up a forest service road.
DARPA Grand Challenge. They did off road self driving cars 10 years ago. They will come in later I'm sure, but not to far behind.

As for low visibility conditions....I presume you use visual clues (reflective markers or plow edge of road indicators, etc) to figure out where to be. No reason a car with a more advanced sensor than the one in your head can't figure that out. Ford already has a autonomous vehicle that can drive with some success in snow.

Think about the market they won't be able to access if they don't figure out low visibility conditions.

***Just a spitball, but for i70 for example, all you need to do is have cars that communicate their position to each other and a LIDAR scan or driving lane location of the highway corridor that gets communicated to the vehicle when it enters a particularly difficult corridor. Automated Machine Control already does 90% this to within a few tenths/hundredths of a foot using very basic 3D information.

How would ROBOCARS interface with trucks going 30 MPHs up hills? Will there be ROBOSEMIS?

That was presented in "Logan". Robosemis go 100mph and don't break or slow for anything

I'm banking on full environmental VR rooms in every home.
Why leave the house for a hike, ride or to ski? Just go into your VR room, put on the gear, and enjoy the show.
There's no traffic, wind holds, lift lines, paid parking or gapers in your "Vail Experience" software. You can always be the first one down Cow's Face with 2' of blower.

Fuck a robot driving me around.
