Rose being Rose (aka amateur hour). It's slightly breezy. Today is a lot like Presidents Day, which would have been one of the best days of the year but they preemptively closed and there ended up being NO wind.

Went for some pre-work hippy turns on my new BC setup early this morning and found 10"+ of fun cream-cheese snow in the mid-elevation Rose-area trees. It was blowing pretty hard and there's definitely some snow transport and windslabbing, but it's not as much as one might expect because the snow is so heavy. I wouldn't want to be above treeline or on anything steepish today though.

Okay everybody, prepare yourself for a cool owl story. As I was skinning this morning, I met a Great Horned Owl standing in the snow about 10 feet away. The owl was massive--over 2 feet tall with a 4 - 5 foot wingspan. He stared straight at me with his big, yellow eyes for about five seconds before flying away with a dead chipmunk in his talons and leaving a large, red blotch and tiny entrails in the snow. (Alvin, Simon, Theodore?) Anyhow, that's my cool owl story.

No suprise here. Somehow Mammoth manages to keep their lifts running through the storm while Rose announces last night they won't open today and Squaw Alpine have everything on the upper Mtn on wind hold.

Chair 1 is also running at Main Lodge even though wind gusts at the top of it are hitting 80mph.
Not sure how good it is, but at least you can make turns.

Was checking the web cams periodically until they stopped working. Moderate wind and the chair was running most of the day for the workers.

Hopefully they get their shit together tomorrow. They won't. Slide will be closed and we'll pull up to main side with the upper lot not plowed yet and them just working on the main lot. Do I brave the KSL shit show tomorrow for the first time this season? Giant douche or turd sandwich...prolly turd sandwich again

one lower chair running at Kirkwood, killing time for the second day after coming down for the Junior IFSA Championship comp. sounds like it'll end up being a one-run deal on sunday.

I was kinda hoping for a springlike weekend, watching groms shred and sipping beverages in the sun! Not so much.

We aren't going to make it to the comp. Too much other stuff going on. Best of luck to your son.

    Is this a fucking joke?

You know how many of you whiny bitches used to complain about cohee-run Kirkwood back in the 00's? I mean, come on you have to be joking. WAY less bullshit with vail owning the resort. WAY.

KW will be the first resort to close in Tahoe. Closing with a fat base and an open storm door and with blatant disregard for their pass holders who've given them nothing but undying shit over the early close date. So fuck Vail. Tell me what exactly did they make better at KW?

Hey. Did not know you were in the valley. I was gonna try to get out over CP this morning but missed the closure. Ended up skinning a lap in the morning then took a few afternoon laps on 5. While there was some good hike to turns, should have kept skinning.

Does your group have BC gear? Tomorrow might be more of the same.

Dude. Beer is now $10 a pint. That is so easy to pay. No need to count change.

In all reality, they did build the shed at the top of 10, which on paper, is an improvement to the on mountain experience.

And not that I have a kid, I do like the safety bars.

    Other than that? Nothing.

$10 a pint fucks the bartender too. At $9 they get a $1 tip. At $10 they probably get zero.

What a cool experience, I love wildlife encounters like that, jealous!

Went with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised on how well the snow skied today.

Pretty entertaining light show on the West Slope around 8pm. Most lightning I've seen in CA maybe ever? Definitely for this time of year.

depends on how they accept payment. the ipads that the customer signs and they choose the tip at the bottom are gold mines at the bar. the higher priced the drink the better when the customer just hits the 20% button.

Yeah we use Square at the bar I tend in the summer. It's always a bit awkward for me with new users but city folk just hit 20%. I tend to use cash. I tip better with cash. The place I work is mostly an espresso joint with beer wine and music Saturday nights in summer. The baristas are always in awe that people tend to tip $1/beer when I'm just pouring it while they don't get the same tip for making an espresso drink.

i wasn't one one of them. sure there were generator fires. sure they had chair 10 patched together with toothpicks and rubber bands toward the end but those days (and especially before the crash when they sort of had money) were when kirkwood was a fun resort AND a great mountain. security wasn't even a thing. the mountain was nowhere near as crowded on powder days and it still had the vibe that Blaise Carrig promised to keep, knowing full well he was lying.

It's a game changer when i do the margarita bar on the beach at the celebrity golf tourney. the drinks are all in the $10 to $40 range (marg pitchers) and the 20% button averages way better than what they tip for those prices and just as importantly i don't deal with wet money any more.

Me thinks thread silent because everyone on here had a ridiculous good day. Anywhere you went right? Not a sleeper per se but expectations exceeded. 2nd wave in the early am laid the blower on the Carson range side. Right side up. Cold temps tonight will reward all snow riders manana

Good on ya. Important event for loc charities - pretty much the biggest for most. Fun times great scene and privilege to work it. Sir Charles at the cigar bar priceless. Actually gonna propose that all tips go to the charities on swipe tip transactions this year. Why not right it's why we're there
