Here's what I mean by de-tuned: lower compression; lower redline; lower peak output; no i-VTEC (less complex valvetrain). All combine to give you a better shot at hitting half a million miles before it needs a rebuild.

looks the same as the standard accord. a friend has an accord, i believe, with that engine. over 350k on it. does minimal to sub-minimal maintenance for the past decade, cheapest gas around, received a fair bit of under carriage damage from trips on bowman lake rd, etc., etc., you can hear it rattling down the street from a block away, still going strong for long commutes, trips for CA to ID, WY, and MT, hauls field dressed doe elk, and frequent trips quick up to donner pass.

Every trip to Target he knows he can walk out with at least a couple matchbox cars and I of course always let him pick. To his credit he never picks any of those goofy cartoonish things some hot wheels have morphed into. This evening though I knew he was mine when he proudly picked this fast Eurowagon over everything else.

He must actually listen to me every now and then.

My first car as a teenager was a '91 Buick Regal that previously belonged to my grandma. Maroon leather interior with fake wood paneling, maroon exterior, fake spoiler, the works. Weighed a bazillion fucking pounds and was a goddamn tank in the snow. Mass is your friend sometimes.

ha, my first car was a 1971 Pontiac Catalina Safari Wagon with a big block. One of the biggest heaviest cars ever made I have no doubt. Pretty sure it saved my life when I ran it into a pole carrying high-tension wires on Long Island. (I've written about that wreck before but I knocked out the power for 100,000 people the electric company reported.)

That's why I'm having a hell of a hard time teaching my 14 year old stepson how to drive a stick. Dude has been stuck in the backseat his whole life while we dodge the safety police and frankly he doesn't care about driving so he hasn't been paying attention. Life is more about what is on his smartphone. I was driving my drunk dad home from the lake with a boat in tow at 14 no problem. Even backed it into the driveway, Ford Zephyr wagon with a 4 speed manual. Different but not better times.
