Killebrew Gate B skiing in the direction of Gate A is probably only the real 'extreme' terrain where you could fall off a cliff etc. Otherwise Mott Canyon is short, steep and sweet..but probably a ton of moguls. If insanely crowded I'd stay near the Mott/Killebrew area which can also be accessed by taking laps via Dipper. Olympic chair is a great early morning groomer chair before the crowds come. Be prepared for some flat spots traversing the mountain...so if you have boarder friends...keep that in mind.

I personally find it hard enough navigating a massive resort like Heavenly for the first time, let alone finding powder stashes. Here my navigation tips if the resort is busy.

Avoid these lifts as much as possible:

    1. Dipper and Comet usually will have big lines with Dipper usually having the longer line. Unless you are using them to get somewhere else I would avoid lapping them. Almost all other lifts on the Nevada side will have shorter lines.

    2. Same rule goes for California side with Canyon and Ski. Sky is general busier than Canyon. Best views of Tahoe are from Sky so you may want to lap that one on not a busy day.

    3. The traverses between California and Nevada are flat and a pain for boarders. There are other flat traverses on the Nevada side that you use to get the lower lifts.

With those things in mind, study the trail map and explore. I hope you have a good time.

Hey, buddy... Hit me up if you still have my number.

I totally dropped the ball the last time you reached out, then I went to the east coast forever...

    Really sorry about that.

Hope you and Cinders are having the raddest winter ever!

Looking for a ski lease in North Lake.

Does anyone have a ski lease that's looking for another member? During the last storm cycle the house I was in received major damage (tree hit it, frozen/broken pipes, etc.). The owner asked to cancel the lease and deal with the repairs in the spring. I've been staying at my touring partners place in Reno, but that's not going to work out for a full season given he has a 6 month old. I'm late 30's, focus on skiing not partying, am not bothered by much...just need a bed to sleep in. I storm chase mid-week and come up on weekends.

PM me if you have any leads. Thanks

Started reading thinking "man what a noob it's waaay too late to get in on ski leases"

Ended thinking oh shit that could happen to anybody.

Would you consider south lake / KW area for a lease? Since I moved down here that's where most my leads are

Ha ha, well I do feel like a jong scouring cragslist and asking friends at this time of year.

I have a Squaw/Alpine pass, so south lake won't work for me. Thanks though.

If you want to ski Silverado just become a pro and speak in front of the Board of Supervisors on behalf of the village development and it's good to go.

Hey, look, this was 2 weeks ago, the day after I saw them doing control work back there. Don't see any snow cats attempting to carve out that ever so difficult path they're complaining about on the Squaw blog.

Here's my video of skiing the leftover 'powder snow' on Sunday at Kirkwood. Hell, I'm not complaining...it was sunny, warm and the snow was ripping, but I did find every aspect that has that dreaded rain layer...lucky me!

Great footage, makes me lust Kirkwood again. I have been north laking it the last several years.

But, I'm willing to give you a second chance and some secret beta for easy sidecountry in and near Heavenly that is pretty much guaranteed to have some blower pow, due to elevation, aspect, and big very widely spaced red firs. For obvious reasons, I don't want to spray that info all over this public forum, especially to a JONG who has not contributed anything to our community - no stoke, no beta for your local area, no offers to sleep with your sister when we come to NYC or wherever to visit, no super gear sales -- just "feed me your secret stashes guys, please!" But, I'm a nice person (I'm from the Midwest - it's part of our character) who still hasn't lost my Midwestern willingness to please, so I'm willing to overlook all of that. Just post up some naked pics of your girlfriend or your wife's tits, and I'll send you some solid choices and recommendations.

    Welcome!
Lol all very good points. Sorry for not thanking you, I was trying not to spam the thread with too many thanks. I already had the link to the trail map, but thanks for making sure that I had it. Also I appreciate the stripper hookup (although I probably should have looked where the link was taking me before going to it while at work, that was my bad). I appreciate the willingness to help me out even though I have contributed nothing to the forum. In an attempt to remedy that, if any of you ever need some advice for a Mt. here on the east coast I will be more than happy to give you all the info and advice I have.

PS. Thanks to person who gave me the advice that the best line I will find is the one I will blow off a strippers ass. I will no doubt make sure to hit that up!

That is probably the best single, graphical representation of all the seasonal weather and snowpack history that I'm constantly trying to remember and keep straight in my head. Really fuckin cool

EDIT: you could do a snow safety version where you overlay SAC advisory level over it just to see what it looks like. Maybe wind speed too. The wheels are turning...

So 666, How many years you been rippin' it up at Kwood? You clearly have the place "figured out"?

How filled in are those lines this year?(duh) But are they the most YOU have ever skied at Kirkwood? or is this comparable to '11 or any other big seasons?

Hoping to get back up there soon, too many kid and work obligations!!! Cannot believe there is another reset coming!

    Glad you liked the figure!

Yes, easy to add SAC, but winds are tough because the sensors ice up or don't transmit. I can, however pull the model output and use that, but the often models won't capture the gnarly winds that actually are observed at the crest (transitions from sub to supercritical flow occur in layers that are too shallow for models to resolve well until you use large eddy simulations or computationally expensive WRF runs). Lemme think about how best to do that.

I'd really like to automate the process to have a real-time figure be produced like this one for everyone to use since all the data is sitting on the web ready to be scraped and plotted, would be neat!

I've been skiing there my whole life...first time when I was around 7 years old (now 40). My first day skiing was at age 3 at Echo Summit Ski Area (which is no longer) and from 3-6 our family mainly stayed up at Norden so I skied mainly Soda Springs with stints at Boreal, Donner Ski Ranch, Tahoe Donner and of course Sugar Bowl. From year 7 onward, we had family homes in South Lake so I'd ski mainly Heavenly & Kirkwood.

Biggest year by far was 94/95 the year I graduated from high school...even more than 10/11. From my experience, the winds can make all the difference...total snowfall can have less affect to coverage than you would believe. Of course, yes, the more snow the better...but I've seen Heart Chute look like Notch Chute and skied chutes on great summer snow at the end of August in 1995 near Round Top.

Here's an example with the data you wanted (when Slide Mountain worked), published in 2014 in The Avalanche Review 32(4). I can send you a pdf of the article on "Striking White Gold in the Emerald Chute" where I evaluated how the awesomeness took place during late Dec 2012 if you'd like.
