According to SAC obs, it looks like the rain saturated the snowpack all the way past that Dec 15 rain crust. Besides the new snow coming in, it should be a bomb proof Sierra snowpack.

skinned up top heave east peak and skiing was great. bout 6' of creamy pow on top of a newly developed rain crust from yesterday but new snow is well bonded to it. went ob to dig where peeps don't ski and dug down bout 4' but couldn't find 12/15 crust so its either deeper or gone or not in area i dug. under new rain crust snow was solid 2 finger and saturated at least 4' down. skied steepest pitch in zone with no movement or evidence of storm activity. lots of undulations from rain event that started to get covered so should be fully covered after next snowfall tonight

    Haha, well played.

Encouraged by that SAC observation and gimpy's post - fingers crossed for a more Tahoe-ish snowpack by next weekend. Based on the forecast you can go ahead and make other plans for tomorrow - I doubt even Northstar will open with that much snow in 24 hours.

I didn't see anything about saturating past the raincrust.
"Old Dec 15 near crust facets on top of the Dec 15 rain crust had become moist and easily formed a hard snowball."
Would love to see some full depth pits. Will wait before getting toooo optimistic.

I'm hoping for big Tahoe and eastside lines to have ripped during the rain and then fill back in this week with some sticky icky, to avoid becoming repeater paths. Nothing like huge runouts to keep the spring skiing game going late in the season

I kayak your powder! With word that the rivers were going to flood, we went high-water playboating yesterday on the North Fork American River.

We started below Lake Clementine, that's about 26,000 cfs spilling over the dam. With the addition of 12,000 cfs at the confluence of the North and Middle Fork American, we had about 38,000 cfs yesterday for our ocean kayaking experience to Folsom Reservoir.

There was over 4' of hard snowball snow, not just the facets around the crust. There is so much weight on the top of the pack right now that I have a hard time believing that anything that was gonna rip big wouldnt have already. The weight of a skier has got to be inconsequential in the current state. I wouldn't be out there pushing the limits right now but I feel much better about things then I did prior to this rain event

At this price, you might as well do the whole thing.

Wait, you're up at Alpine now? Staying at the Chalet or crashing in the car? Or do you just mean the general neighborhood?

Dr Orr is the man! Usually works out of SLT but is in Incline once a week I believe.

Dodd did a nice job nailing my tibia. I'd have him operate on me again if I needed work done locally.

Well it looks like Thursday will be the first day I ever ski Kirkwood. I think I picked a good day for it.

Dumped in Meyers over night. I'm too busy shoveling to measure. I'm not glad that it rained for a few days, but my back is.

Upper mountain = not a chance.
Roundhouse & Hot Wheels = maybe... but don't be surprised if they have to close down part way through the day to resume control work if it snows as hard as it's supposed to. You can always hop over to Northstar and ski the trees.
