Let's play guess the street
That would be a semi-tragic turn of events for someone of the GSA's stature. Ditching his high-powered Manhattan lifestyle to putter around what looks like the Pacific Northwest with a kid in tow?
That said, this very well could be. I don't think that's an e-bike. Pushing a kid around on a cargo bike is hard work. Perhaps the perfect pre-season workout for his coming domination of the mountains.

"Exclusive footage obtained by the Guardian shows the transport secretary, Chris Grayling, knocking a cyclist off his bike when opening the door of his ministerial car near the Houses of Parliament. "

"Uber has admitted that there is a “problem” with the way autonomous vehicles cross bike lanes, raising serious questions about the safety of cyclists days after the company announced it would openly defy California regulators over self-driving vehicles.
An Uber spokeswoman said on Monday that engineers were working to fix a flaw in the programming that advocates feared could have deadly consequences for cyclists."
Apparently Uber doesn't want to take out the $150 permit, which they would have no trouble getting, because they would be required to report all incidents involving the test cars. I'm not sure I want the company that seeks to completely redesign and dominate transportation in this country to be secretive about accidents and openly defiant of regulation. It's not just cyclists that should be worried. All-powerful Google and Facebook seem to have some semblance of a conscience. These guys don't.
In the meantime we can fight back against the new technology by letting the lanes and center lines be invisible for 80% of the year--either covered by snow and ice or scraped away. In that respect Truckee is way ahead of the game.
In all honesty, I'm less worried about an Uber autonomous car than your standard human meat computer behind the wheel. At least the Uber has sensors that *should* stop the car when it senses an impending collision.
As to lane markings, the Uber cars have been driving SF streets with LIDAR to create a more precise 3D map of the city. I'm guessing this is intended to get around the non-standard ways in which the pavement is marked and streets are signed. So Truckee's defenses will be easily thwarted by our future autonomous vehicle overlords...

I mean really, why were they out there?

That was terrifying to watch. But all the more reason to stay right even if you don't have to, watching your wife get killed in front of you would be unimaginable.
The guy passed that close on purpose. And then stopped to give the cyclists and ear-full. Staying right wouldn't have helped. Most people don't think it's acceptable to intentionally put another human being in fear of their life like that.
Enough do. I've had cars swerve in front of me on the bike lane as close as the can get and slam on the brakes. I've been half way across the street in a crosswalk and had a speeding car flash its headlights to let me know he had no intention of stopping. I guess I should be grateful he let me know. My wife was crossing the street when a speeding car deliberately screeched to a stop inches from her. They are plenty of people who think it's fine to scare other drivers, bikers, and walkers--one can only hope they don't miscalculate.
