More complaints. Ringer volume has a mind of its own. Butt dials more than any phone I've ever had. Sends texts randomly from my pocket too. But mainly, the OS is just fucking annoying for so many reasons I can't even start to list. I've been on Android for probably 6 years, and it has just evolved into a cumbersome, glitchy POS.
It aint the OS...its the overlay that Samsung puts onto android to give you all the "fancy" functions and bloatware. Using pure android would solve most of these issues. I've never had a phone do what you all are explaining happening to the S5 and i've had a lot of fucking phones. Only times i saw weird behavior like that was after serious drops that might not look like they affected anything but in reality fucked up internal sensors or parts. this could explain some of peoples issues. Just cause it visibly survived the fall doesnt mean some piece inside wasnt fucked up.

Nope, that's not it. It's just a shitty phone with a shitty OS and shitty "overlay". You want to argue about it? Talk to someone else. I'm getting a new phone soon anyway.

no argument, but i bet if you put pure andriod sans any overlay from Samsung you'd have a totally different experience. In fact id bet a couple bucks on it, but id imagine its not worth your time to try..for the S5 it would be rooting, installing a custom ROM, etc....the underlying Android OS is solid as its running on a TON of other phones out there with little complaint. Feel free to join the sheeple at Apple though...nothing ever goes wrong with iOS...ever

GS7 is excellent. No complaints at all. Dig the inexpensive Spigen case I got for it too. Slim, but plenty of protection. (I tend not to drop phones on their faces though...)

So you are such a tech geek that someone's phone defines who they are? Sweet, good luck with that.

    I don't even have a keypad lock and I don't butt dial.
My name starts with an a, so butt dialings happen. Usually my parents. They have iPhones.

I have been with Apple from the beginning. 4, 5, 5s, I'd say about 7 years with their phones. There are several things I don't like about the iPhones, including the bullshit they load onto it that I never use and can't delete, ICLOUD, the shit methods of merging apple accounts (this was partially on me but still pisses me off), and did I mention iCloud? Several other minor issues are the battery life going in about 2 years, the speaker that you hold to your ear on phone calls is too quiet, and not having a case really isn't an option (at least for me).

That said, I have had zero problems with poor functionality or glitchiness.. ever. The phones just work. I have been extremely cautious about installing the system updates, I think at one point I waited over a year to update to let the bugs get worked out.

My 5s is about 2 years old which means it's almost new phone time. I just found out yesterday that the 7 doesn't have an audio jack, now that is bullshit! Honestly thinking about getting the 5se (iphone 5 frame with 6 internals) if they still offer it. If not I'd go 6 and be done with it. Like I said earlier, the most frustrating part of the iphone for me right now is a problem where my old iCloud account was canceled, yet my phone doesn't recognize it, and a pop up asks me to log in about every 30 seconds. Now that shit is annoying.

My POS Galaxy S6 lasted all of 6 months, if that.

Just got a new Kyocera Duraforce. Bomber. Great phone so far. Great speakers, touchscreen works when wet and with gloves, battery lasts all day with heavy usage, button layout makes sense, charges with micro usb (fast with 2.4amp charger).

    What phone now?

I had a 4s for a few years. My 2 yr old 5s is about ready for upgrade. Never used a protective case on this one, and it has survived largely (2 dunks while fishing, dropped plenty of times, the glass is loose, I think...you can squeeze the case slightly). I don't use iCloud except to sync contacts, notes, and calendar; no issues with iCloud IME. But pretty happy with battery life (charge every night) and OS & app stability. There's been no software frustrations that I've experienced. That's why I asked above.

Not sure I can stomach paying for the 7...starts at $650?!? Even at $30/mo, that's rough.

I must be out of the loop, did they rework the contract payments or something? When I got my 5s I believe I could have gotten the 16G for free, but I paid 100 or 200 extra for the32G, and that was it. Now they're charging $650 even with the contract? That's madness.

I finally solved that after two calls to Apple support. I forget the process but part of it was to remove any apps that I had purchased through the cancelled account. No problems or being asked for the old password since.

    What phone now?

Phone companies aren't subsidizing the phones anymore so they basically offer a payment plan or retail purchase. I think it started with introduction of the 6. My 16g 5s was sure as hell not free, $250 or so, but nowhere near current pricing

My wife and I still have our 5's, mine's a little older, I replaced the battery in mine for 10 bux and it works fine. I'm sick and tired of the charger cord replacement bullshit. I bought nightstand chargers that double up as clocks/speakers for the house and they will be rendered useless with the new chargers. There is nothing about the newer models that makes me feel like I'm missing out on something and I'm not fond of the jumbo size phones out there.

    Apple is an obnoxious company.
Not that forcing Windows 10 on people like a virus wasn't obnoxious, but this type of shit is Apple's MO.
Sell everyone overpriced headphones. Drop the headphone jack.

You seem to need lots of validation for your cell phone preference. Have a good time with that.

    Project Fi/ Nexus 5X update:

Exactly mid-way through my first billing month, have used 0.062 gb data. Updated to Android 7 (Nougat) earlier this week -- only notice some minor differences (apparently split-screen is a big deal, but I don't care), with the exception of improved "doze" feature. Phone now goes into doze and stays there even while moving. Battery life is impressively improved.

Seems like a good place to ask this:

If you needed to have a GPS with turn-by-turn directions (google maps or similar) for someone who does not own a smartphone, and only needed it for about 5 days, what would be the best way to go about it? If "get a phone" is the answer, what is the cheapest option for a phone that can do this and a phone service that we can cancel after it's over?

Buy a GPS at a place with a really good return policy and no restocking fee.

Wait, am I missing something here? Apple didn't change the dock connector, it's still the same one that's been around since the 5 (the "Lightning" version). People bitched about that change when it happened, but I don't hear anyone these days lamenting the loss of the giant old dock connector. If you have an iPhone 5, you shouldn't need a new charger or dock for the 7, right?

Now getting rid of the headphone jack, that's another story. My guess is that in a couple of years it won't be an issue because this will force a lot of folks into wireless headphones and bluetooth connections and they'll get used to it, but it's a pain in the meantime.

I've got a 5s with a cracked screen that I've had for 3 years, and am torn about upgrading. Would like to get the slightly larger screen and more storage (and an intact screen), but other than that I'm fine with the current phone. Having to pay $750 out of pocket is a tough pill.
