To each their own I guess. They look less obnoxious with those tires, which don't look like someone outlined the rim with a fine tip sharpie.. Didn't particularly care for the wannabe 914 boxter idea either... Porsche makes great cars... if there is a company that doesn't need to constantly try to rest on its laurels, Porsche is it. Why is the new (post 993, if not earlier) 911 a 911 at all? That boxster has fuck all to do with a 914. For a "sports car" company that sells more SUVs and sedans than 2 seaters, it boggles my mind why they don't just come up with a couple of new model names and get on with it already.

Yes, a water cooled 911 is a 911. Any mental gymnastics to the contrary is a purely masturbatory exercise.

Porsche sells SUVs and 4 doors to subsidize 911s and the myriad of 911 variants available. This was discussed by the company at length when they debuted the Cayenne years ago.

I can't help you if you don't understand why Porsche doesn't sever ties with its past and 'come up with new model names and get on with it already'. It's who Porsche is, it's what makes their legions of fans so devoted to them, it's why the roof line of the 911 is directly traceable back to the first 356. Porsche is nothing if not deeply connected to its roots. Anyone looking for that to change should consider a Merc. They seem to like changing model names on the reg.

But yeah, to each their own.

Of course it's a 911.. Porsche gets to name their cars and call it whatever they want. But if your version of the masturbatory exercise is in any way more meaningful than mine, why isn't everyone driving a 356 since that's where we find the beginning of the sole remaining vestige of the car's lineage?

I'd bet most Porschephiles would if they could, which is why companies like Singer are doing such bang up business. But more accurately I believe that most want the modern amenities that a 911 offers while still keeping them stylistically tied to the past.

It's why Fuchs wheels and houndstooth and Martini livery paintjobs are still en vogue.

I just meant the name... They're all just newer 356's right?

And your explanation for why Singer doesn't tune a 996? They use 996 and later parts, right? Why no water cooled throwbacks?

There's no leg for anyone to stand on that the 993 and earlier 911's were all the same car, but there's a real break in the story line in 1997.

I see what you meant with the 356 name. Probably because the real break was when they stopped making it and started making the 911 - the name that has stuck ever since. Every other iteration afterwards has been linked to the first simply by styling, putting the engine at the back, and keeping it one of the best driving experiences ever conceived.

My guess is that since you can still find plenty of low miles 996s you won't see Singer doing any retro mods of one for at least another 20 years. I could be wrong.

911 sales are about double Panamera.

Old Porsches are great and all, but they have reached a level of value where you can't even enjoy them.

That and the new cars are fucking beasts.

Well there you go. I remember the collective outrage from Porsche enthusiasts when the Cayenne was introduced and the company at the time said it was necessary to allow them to continue making the 911 and other projects in a manner they wanted to.

Things are definitely different now since there seems to be about 15 different 911s available for this model year alone.

Boxster is largley attributed to saving Porsche.

I'm still waiting for the return of a properly redesigned 928. Not too much redesign mind you, this is Porsche we're talking about.

    I'd like a 944S2.

They were such beautifully balanced and sweet handling cars. Pretty too.

I daren't look how much they're worth now.

944s2's can be had for not a ton of money... certainly not so much that you'd be afraid to drive it... ~$30k for a really good one.

    Another 928? No thanks.

Go on and look. It's ok

When I got my BRZ I was torn between it and a really nice 944. Driving down the road a few days ago I spotted one for sale and almost pulled over to look at it but decided that red would be bad for me so I didn't. I should go back there. No I shouldn't.

I got curious and found this beautifully sorted 944s2 on bringatrailer.com

Then I looked at the date of the ad.

As BD and I mentioned above, the 981 Boxsters are beautiful and a blast to drive. And you're right, there's thousands of them out there.

I seem to recall a bit with Hammond and Clarkson where they showed how much used car you can get for the price of a horrible new car. Boxster was one of them.

Chevy unveiled the Corvette Grand Sport in Geneva today. Call me crazy but I kinda like it. I've always thought those dual stripes over a front wheel well are pretty snappy too.

Although would it kill someone at GM to get rid of the cheap buttons on the dash that I've seen in every rental Malibu for the past 15 years?

God damn they really need to work on their interiors.

That's the most common complaint with every model they made, you'd think they would get some people on that.
