From the CBAC this morning: "I'm at a loss for words this morning. My heart goes out to friends, family, and everyone involved. The group was aware of this week's snow load. They weren't looking to ski an aggressive line or hi-mark a bold face. They were building a jump on relatively small, rolling terrain, next to a road that has become a winter-time thoroughfare for skiers and snowmobilers. I've passed under that slope dozens of times without giving it much consideration. The bottom of the slope, where the slide was triggered from, had been crossed a number of times already that day. This is the scary and harsh reality of persistent slab avalanches: they can surprise us with their size, with how wide they propagate or where we can trigger them from, and with how seemingly stable they might act before failing."
.........terrible. Vibes all around. So scary and sad

[Repost from the summit thread in General]
Summit county poser checking in. This might be a long shot, but I was at A-Basin on Friday, and here's what happened:
- Finish up my day, have a beer, buddy agrees to give me a ride. He gives me the keys, I take my boots/helmet down to the lot.
- Said buddy drives a white Subaru, parked next to a nearly identical white Subaru. I pop the hatchback and deposit my stuff.
- I go back up and have two more beers.
- He brings the car around, I throw in my skis without really thinking, we drive back to Breck.
- Upon reaching Breck I realize something terrible has happened.
- I proudly claim my rightful status as the second biggest fuckup in this thread.
So if you found a pair of 2013 full tilts (brown, the Tom Wallisch model, without the weird leather in the front) and a black helmet with some gloves/liners in the bowl, PM me. Upon retrieval there will be a small cash reward; in addition, I will buy you as many beers as it took to make this fuckup in the first place.
maybe I'm just slow, but I'm not sure what happened here... did you put your stuff in the back of someone else's car???
Decent day up high at Breck...definitely feeling the suncrust though. Snowing pretty hard at times.
Snow was just thick enough to provide some quality float. Good surfing down Spaulding Bowl all morning.
Total sleeper pow day at Wolf Creek. Blue bird w/ 7" reported. Much deeper in the bowls and empty.
Last bucket yesterday on Ajax was awesome..... nobody there and 4" that seemed to fill in all the holes.

Fukt: a very small amount of snow.
yeah, I think that's what happened, but he says his buddy gave him the keys, he popped the hatch and put his stuff in. Only way he put his stuff in someone else's car is if he didn't use the keys because the car was open, or he did use the keys to pop the hatch but somehow put his shit in the car next to the one he just popped. Weird.

I'll confirm that Breck was pretty sweet today. No lines except for a mellow one on imperial until around 11 (where did everyone go??). Super surfy creamy pow. Pretty much skied onto the lift each lap, and mostly untracked till the final bell. 5" sure does ski well in the alpine. CJs and Magic Carpet was money. Whoever said you could feel the suncrust was either skiing in the wrong places or wasn't going fast enough.

Thanks man. I'm sorta giving up hope at this point but I really appreciate the advice.
To be honest I'm not entirely sure how this went down either. I'm pretty sure what happened was the hatch on the other car was left unlocked, and I just dumped my gear into it by accident. This is pretty much the only explanation I've been able to wrap my head around. I unlocked the car remotely (no audible beep,) opened the hatch manually, dumped the gear in, and locked it behind me (barely audible beep - and, normally, not cause for attention.) To be fair I was zonked from a third straight full day of hard skiing, feeling blissed-out, and not listening particularly hard.
Jealous of you guys at Breck, had to miss this day due to the aforementioned. Have fun out there tomorrow!
Holy shit:

a lone skier almost lost his life by tempting fate in a big way. He tried to ski an extremely aggressive line down a wind load south aspect above 12,000 ft. This was the slope you can see from I-70 north side on the west side of the EJ tunnels. The route even in the spring under perfect conditions would be considered risky. It appears that he was only a few turns in when a relatively shallow 2 foot fracture spanning the width of the chute he was attempting broke loose. The slide stepped down into deeper layers involving much more snow. This in turn swept him over a big cliff causing severe injuries. Somehow he was only buried part way and was able to use his cell phone to call for help. S&R was utilized to extricate the man successfully and he earned an ambi ride to Denver.

Great choice for a solo mission!
A couple years ago someone went for a ride over there. I normally sport my beacon up there for a reason. We skied the stuff between 6 and 7 on Saturday, heavily wind loaded and no bomb holes. I was a little worried as I dropped in to make first tracks on some very steep terrain.
