Reforestation of the earth is the only answer.

If anyone related to helping the environment has ethics, they will be replanting the forests across the entire Earth, everything else is false hope branding of politics.

This is what I thought. Then I was having a conversation with my son, who's major is environmental sciences, says it wont work, not enough. Then I googled and became edgeamakated.

So a mature forest can soak up the equivalent of 440 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per hectare in the 50-100 years it takes to reach maturity - that's a one-off total - not per year and may take several decades to get there.

In order to deal with currently generated carbon dioxide, an area of forest equivalent to:

22 billion tonnes divided by 440 tonnes per hectare - is needed

=50 Million hectares per annum or 500 000 square kilometres per annum

...to be planted with forest and held in perpetuity (not cut down or allowed to revert back to atmospheric carbon dioxide).

This is approximately equivalent to the entire land area of Spain, twice as big as the United Kingdom and bigger than any US state other than Texas (696,621 sq km.) or Alaska (1,717,854 sq. km.) To be forested anew each year and held as such forever.

Therefore planting trees alone other than on a colossal scale is not going to even allow us to stand still
- let alone start to reverse the effects of global warming.

thanks for your reply. Many environment science schools are funded by the big bad gov and large Multinational corps....even down to the books they use and choosing professors, both here in the USA and in Canada. The perpetuation of the same practices are in their best interests....

Also, your numbers for CO2 absorption are off. Much/most/all of that CO2 absorption research is based on lab results, not actual field measurements with undergrowth or in test/farm plots with controlled soil , and also not including cleared land's influence on weather system patterns, which are much more important numbers. . Also, some of that data/perspective is funded by more than just the two main players, oil and paper pulp, but many other players.

Seeding the ocean with iron and silicic acid is most likely more effective and cheaper per ton of CO2 than planting trees.
