Doesn't really stop shit, tape will slip and drill collars will also slip so I use a wine bottle cork

drill a hole thru the cork, move the bit up/down in the chuck only leaving as much drill sticking out of the cork as you need depth

its fool proof cuz if the bit slips in the chuck you just don't drill as far

Epoxy question as holes are already on ski exactly as I need them. Not 100% I will want to keep the skis. Bought them cheap and figured with the same holes, if I did not like them, they would sell at the loss of the cost of a day of demoing. So, I'm about to mount my bindings.

I have 5 minute 1500psi epoxy that is easy enough to break, but I was thinking of not putting any epoxy in at all. If I decide to keep them, I'd just pull the bindings and replace with epoxy. I might even decide to put in inserts instead.

WWMD - 5 Min epoxy or none at all?

Why not use the 5 min stuff? Sealed binding holes, easy to break...I'm not seeing a down side.

PSA: Mount your own fucking skis.

IMHO, I'd go none if the threads are in good shape. Just glue and screw. Spin the screws counter clockwise as they go into the hole until you feel them drop into/line up with the existing threads, then screw them in clockwise. If you get a spinner, then go the epoxy/fiberglass route. YMMV and all that.

    That's why it's the manliest.

Finished mounting two pair of fucking skis tonight. First day of the season for me tomorrow (greens teaching Mrs. 1000-Oaks, but hey it's skiing).

Turns out I needed to drill two new holes per ski. Turns out my p14 have a slightly different pattern on the heel than a fks 18. Decided to seal them up and use epoxy. Easiest mount ever.

You NEED to have the brakes installed on those. It's part of the boot platform/support.
Plus, skiing without brakes is dumb and dangerous for other skiers.

You can swap them out even at almost any ski shop. Cost $0.

    It was a weak joke.

Just going to wax them before sticking the brakes on. Who the hell would have their kids ski without brakes??

Mounted my own fucking skis today. I must add, 4 pints is a bit too much, gave myself a shivering fright concerning BSC at some point, but everything was absolutely perfect.

Just did a mount that had touching holes, but I epoxied aluminum #12 sheet metal screws into the old holes first, cut off the heads and ground 'em flat. Tapped the new holes, which cut a bit of thread into the aluminum screws.

I've waited twenty years for that!
Besides, it's been a strange year price-wise here in Russland. I've scored both labs and kingpins for around seven hundred together.

Jong question: any tips for drilling more vertically with a hand drill?

I've done a few mounts now, all with a jig, and have noticed that inevitably about 1/4 of the holes I drill are like 1mm off due to verticality slop in the jig guides. It hasn't caused any major problems, but getting some of my Dynafit toes screwed in has required some finesse.

Drill press or a bit/tap guide like this: http://www.slidewright.com/big-gator...ine-thread.php . If you're using a worn-out jig then drill press is probably the best option, or replace jig with one with less slop?
