Binky, I have done the same thing when I learned to fly fish awhile back. What made all the difference was having a buddy take me who knew what he was doing- game changer. Also, save up for a half-day with a guide, that will also pay huge dividends. You'll be catching 20 inchers on a size 22 fly in no time.

as much as i'd like it not to end the pull of seasonal addiction order and a summer of honeydo negligence means this was probably the last get outta town piscadorial pursuit.
started the season here over st patties day so a green ending brings er round full circle

didn't see to many live green headed red dressed land locked salmos

    wtf dad

hooked up w/ some slc cats saved them a wtf were we thinkin 20+ mile maiden float of their new hydes

had to pull overs and do sum safeties buzz catchin while waitin

managed to grasp a rainbows or 2

there were bikini clad cuties and gods

my bro blasted outta work sat night and made it up to float sun
some bwo and caddis on top once things warmed up in am but went full bore river white caps windoming early that day

but my bro managed to git the 8 weights to send em far nuffs to gits eaten

saw kokomos but downstream 30 mph tail winds ment go with the flows speeds
winds kicked back a bit that eve so we relaunched in the spillway to koke spot surprisingly not many
my bro took the captains chair to learn 2 hands 2 sticks 1 beer 1 smoke multitaskin

    got dark n blurry

pulled out n the dark shouda stopped by k's camper but the slate takeout is the only mandatory feet wet
and my waderless ass was cold .
managed to roust early dp mon 34 degrees frosties start

    slow morn

Pulled over for sum stick fetchin, battered up n substance

warmed up a bit and a small hatch started but not many snouts
stuck a few on the streamers

stopped by kokomos camp on the way outta town but they were out fishin sorry i missed ya.

Hey! Just in time to go fish in a Man's Fishery: GOA golden king crab in 300 fathoms of water!

That's only 5 king coiler stacks going over the rail with every string set, or about 15 bitchin armloads of crabline. And the pots and sinking line have to be hella heavy to tend bottom with all that sail area above them... Whew!

Then, they take 30 minutes to block up, if they're not popping and coming up slow. This gives your deck boss, "Fightyaforit Mike", lots of time to drink his daily quart of Irish whiskey and spin yarns about ol'time skippers who used to throw 4 candy bars on deck for 5 deckhands, just to watch who'd fight for it...

it was great to fish out there SFB and sorry we didn't link up. i sure recognized your dog right away. man the winds were brutal that sunday. we scared up a bunch nymphing and a couple on streamers. i lost what was probably a chunky brown near the end of our float sunday, would have loved to see that fish. didn't get into anything bigger than 18" but they are certainly angry there. hope to be back

In the salt....it's been fantastic. Saturday off LI was wild....bass to 42" and blues to 16lbs...a report of a 22lber came in as well...nonstop and nearly instant hook ups live lining. Plugs were working as well and almost every cast had a fish stalking it if it didn't take.

I'll argue at one point there was a stacked 1/2 mile of bunker schooling and being crushed by everything hungry...including the 2 finback whales we hung with...iPhone pics of whale so pic quality is eh but they rolled around for nearly 3 hrs.
